Chimpbot wrote this in the forum rules thread:

WARNING

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

On a final note, please refrain from advertising for your mod and recruiting team members. This forum is for ESF, not your plethora of mods.

Remember the rules, and respect your fellow board members. Do not flame, spam, racially or religeously slur, attack, or swear on the forums, or it will result in disclipinary action being taken against you.

First Occasion
- Warning

Second Occasion
- Temporary Ban (2 weeks)

Third Occasion
- Permanent Ban
- WonID Ban on all ESF servers
- Termination of Internet Connection by ISP

We also reserve the right to immediately ban people who have been trouble makers before, to protect those who are using the forum for the right purposes.

What does "termination of internet connection by ISP" mean?

in short, your isp will terminate your account, and you will no longer have internet, until you find another isp

they dont need to, unless you host your own isp, your isp has rules, when you break these rules they just hafta inform your isp of you doing so and they do what they have to

this is only under extreme conditions and i cant say i know it has happened to anyone since ive been here, (though i may be wrong)

It's basically a bluff to scare people into following the rules. (Which they should.)

In most cases, your ISP couldn't give a flying BEEP unless you're breaking local, state, federal or international law.

If you call up a national ISP and complain that 'the person using the IP 197...etc) is advertising on our illegitimate and technically illegal mod, for another illegitimate and technically illegal mod for members!,' They're not going to terminate their account on your word, or even if you have proof.

But, I suppose having it SAY that makes them seem somehow more powerful. *shrug*
Just follow the damned rules.

keep thinking that but i bet thoes people who got cut off would argue that its real

its quite easy to get an isp to disconnect someone as long as they are actualy doing something wrong

so think its a "scare tactic" all u want but its real and has been used on several occasions before

Exactly. "As long as they're doing something wrong."

And in the end user agreement of ISPs such as AOL, Verizon, Compuserve(as it was), Prodigy Internet and Comcast cable, there is absolutely nothing about displeasing forum mods on technically illegitimate modifications.

I have no doubt that you could indeed have someone's ISP cut them off if it were "Bob's 56k Dialup," but any major ISP would require strict proof of actual -illegal- activity in order for them to terminate service.

Verizon has actually refused -subpoenas- for legal documentation for their users being targetted by the RIAA for suspected filesharing, do you really think they'd terminate someone's service for advertising for a mod, on another mod's forum?

Give me a break.

I remeber that cucumba in a simular threat once said that the isp of the user Skater0X (x was number of accound) lost his ISP by multiple 'extreme' rule brakings.

so yaeh it's possible and they will use it, if nececairy... and under extreme circumstances.

Cuc also has close connections with ISP companies. anyway it is real, but ofcourse it is only done to people who done things that are totally not allowed.

dont worry, when you spam or do something stupid you'll just get a warning, it'll take a lot more if you want us to attempt to terminate your ISP

Even if you spam the forum full, you just get banned.

Termination of Internet Connection by ISP will only accure when you hack, email bomb someone.

The ISP won't disconnect you because you spam one lousy forum.

Just to clarify . . .

VT, the original admin of these forums wrote that, not Chimpbot. Chimpbot edited it last, so it shows up as him. That is the last possible solution that I will resort to for disciplinary action. I have attempted it four times, three were successful. After determining your ISP, I can go to their webpage and read their TOS/AUP. If your TOS is broken by your actions, I can send an email and have your ISP terminate your contract.

I have done so before for Harrasment and Porn being posted on the board, as well as threatened attacks on the board etc.

It's not an idle threat, it is something I'm capable of doing, but it is something I rarely do.
