Okay, well it's not BRAND new. It came out a little over a month ago. Anyway, it's the #2 game on gamefaqs for accessed pages, second to only Doom3.

It's GameCube only, although they are making a PS2 port in Japan--not sure if it'll come to the US. It's a sequel (previous knowledge not required) to the game "Tales of Destiny," for PS1.

Has anyone else played this game? I bought a gamecube the other day, completing my "next-gen collection," and this was one of the first games I picked up, even though the first 4 stores I checked were completely sold out.

If you liked the game "StarOcean2: The Second Story" for PS1, you'd love this game. It's very similar in many aspects--especially the combat system, and it's up to 4 players (each player can control one of the characters in battle,) but only one controls the char on the main map/towns, etc.

The intro to the story is,

"Once upon a time there existed a giant tree that
was the source of all mana. A war, however, caused
this tree to wither away, and a hero's life was
sacrificed in order to take its place. Grieving
over the loss, the goddess disappeared unto the
heavens. The goddess left the angels with the
edict: "You must wake me, for if I should sleep,
the world shall be destroyed." The angels bore
the Chosen One, who headed towards the tower that
reached up unto the heavens. And that marked the
beginning of the regeneration of the world."

It's very "anime-ish," the characters are cel-shaded, there are anime FMV sequences, and the sheer amount of voice-over acting is impressive. It's also done pretty well, several famous voiceactors, one of them is "He-Man" from the cartoon, also Michaelangelo from the original Ninja Turtles show.

Unfortunately there's no japanese dialogue option, but you can turn off the english voice-over, or listen to it. It's not bad. Anyway, the game is fun, it's 2 mini-discs long, and boasts 80 hours of gameplay.

Anyone have any thoughts?

Is that the same game that allows you to play multiplayer through the campaign? I thought that was a very neat feature and I've heard only good things about that game. If I had an Xbox, I'd probably end up picking it up. I guess I'll have to wait for the PS2 version to come out.

Nevermind, you already answered my question. *slaps forehead*

I've heard only great things about this game. My friend has a webby, he showed me the game over webby (his cam has excellent FPS) and i was in love. It looks like a game i could tottaly get into. And all my fellow FF7 fanatics who got it even said it better then FF7 itself, which is no small feat. The fighting looks really fun, and the fact you can have up to 4 people fighting, that can be a blast.

It's an RPG, not an online game.

Regardless of whether ToD has a sequel, Tales of Symphonia is part of the series.

I rented it a week and a half ago, and, having enjoyed Tails of Destiny, I rather enjoyed this. I think it's quite an enjoyable game with its active battle system, allowing for a full range of motion. The style of graphics, I feel, really goes well with the general feel of the game. I can see myself picking the game up in the near future, after I clear up some projects I have been working at.

An excellent game, for what I saw of it.

This series comes from the SNES series which was called Tales of Phantasia which was an awesome game. I've been thinking about picking this one up but I'm a bigger Star Ocean Fan so I'm waiting to get Star Ocean; Till the End of Time for the ps2 which comes out August 31, 2004. If you ever got the chance to enjoy Star Ocean for the Snes you should fall in love with this game. One thing about ToS I have tried it and the one part I hated was "Congratulations you have created a Sandwich" that is sooooo freakin sad why couldn't I create an awesome sword or some kind of weapon or clothing no I got to create a sandwich heh.

Anyways for those people who don't have GC because its just one hurtin system and don't feel like wasting $99 and if you got a ps2 just wait for Star Ocean: Till the End of Time from what I saw from both games SO is going to be the better one especially on the story I read a bit of ToS' story and sorry too say its kind of sad and not wanting to draw someone in but again I have yet to play this game so I don't know that for much just from what I saw it looked not so great.

that game is so *** no offense man but it is they copy ff series
What an unbelievably ignorant statement. I doubt you've even played the game, because it's absolutely nothing like any of the recent final fantasies. 12? No. 11? No. 10, 9, 8, 7? No.

The combat system is absolutely nothing like the Final Fantasies, being realtime and multiplayer as opposed to single player and turn based.

Symphonia is the 5th in the series, out of 6 total (one being developed):

Tales of Phantasia (SNES, 95)
Tales of Destiny (PS1, 97)
Tales of Destiny II (This game never came to the US. The Japanese "Tales of Eternia" came to the US, named as Tales of Destiny II, but it's not the actual sequel to Tales of Destiny, that was released in Japan)(PS, 9/10/01)
Tales of Eternia(PS, 2001) (released in a greatest hits package)
Tales of Symphonia (Gamecube, 2004)
Tales of Rebirth(upcoming, PS2)

Like I said, if you actually bothered to play the game, you'd realize what a stupid comment that was.
