a lot of children for some reason lose touch with reality, they can't see the difference between reality and fiction. there will just always be some sick minded people in the world. children are given too much freedom, to call your parents names etc,. some friends of mine just call their parents names. and don't get punished for it. heck i'm 18 years old, but I don't want to call my mother anything. it's those small things like cucumba said, about punishment that drives kids to a certain freedom, they get away with everything. Combine that with a naive mind, a mind that loses touch with reality. and you have a dangerous combination.

I look around at how people parent these days and I'm appalled. Time outs? WTF?!?
I have a good story about that. I was in my office, and this woman who works there brought her son (single mothers, don't even get me started on that ****). He was running around the place like a little maniac, he can't be more than 6 or 7. He's running around knocking stuff over, he starts screaming that AWFUL little kid scream that's so jaggedly loud it scrapes the roof of his mouth. The kid is on my nerves already, and the mom is getting uber-embarassed. She tries to hold his hand and says, "Uh-uh, Mummy says you're not supposed to do that," and the kid is just SCREAMING AT THE TOP OF HIS LUNGS RIGHT IN HER FACE, and still she keeps this retarded Mother Hubbard tone going on. She basically is now ASKING the kid to behave--"Please be good for mummy, Kevin, please?"

The kid is yelling and saying stuff like "Shut up mama" (no lie). I was trying to mind my own business but then the ****er came over to my desk in one of his insane runs around the office area, and he pulled on the paperwork I was currently working on. He knocked over all my ****, knocked it all out of order, and worst of all, his mom just looked at me like, "I'm sorry! I don't know what to do!"

So I yelled. And when I yell, I have a very unpleasant razorblade-spin going on. It's LOUD. I pounded my hand down on the desk as soon as the stuff fell, and then I screamed at the top of my lungs (in my uber-deep voice, no less). All I said was "HEY!!"

The kid froze. He dropped whatever he had in his hands and just stood stark still.

"YOU DON'T DO THAT! UNDERSTAND??"

He gave me a slow nod, still frozen up though. Then I calmed down and said, "Don't touch anything and listen to your mother. Got it?"

Slow nod.

The best part of this story is what happened last: his mother, a co-worker of mine, asked me the next day, "Oh my god, Rob...how did you ever get him to stop?!"

****ed up world we live in.

Heh, this topic is so beaten into the ground it's not funny. You're preaching to the choir here man. Ever since Columbine even happened, topics like this come up in gaming forums once a month. It goes like this.

"Games don't make you violent/psychotic! Man, people sooo incredibly stupid!"
"I AGREE"
"DITTO"
"DITTO"
"DITTO"
"DITTO"
"DITTO"

Anyway I guess I'll put in my ditto. Yes. I believe only very small and stupid children can actually be influenced by games to the point where they go "DUDE SHOOTING PEOPLE IS COOL LET'S DO THAT!" and even then, it's a stretch. It's all about scapegoating; parents today for the most part raise ****ty kids because they neglect them, and thus our media ends up corrupting the hell out of their innocence and attitudes, and MTV ends up raising and nurturing our children while we work all day. The by-product of all that garbage is messed up kids with emotional problems, work ethic issues, and absolutely no respect for anybody. When said parents come home they have little to no authority over their kids and don't get on their case as much because hey, "sorry I wasn't there." People try to pass off their terrible parenting by throwing it onto crap like movies, video games, TV, or try and justify the fact that they have a lazy ass kid (who is lazy because they never disciplined him about his homework) by saying they have some overdiagnosed "disorder" like ADD.

That's different. Games mess with people's grades all the time. Hell if I spent half as much time studying/working than I spend goofing off on this machine, I'd be a friggin' A student. Frankly though, I think that's mostly my fault, not my parents'.
