I look around at how people parent these days and I'm appalled. Time outs? WTF?!?
I have a good story about that. I was in my office, and this woman who works there brought her son (single mothers, don't even get me started on that ****). He was running around the place like a little maniac, he can't be more than 6 or 7. He's running around knocking stuff over, he starts screaming that AWFUL little kid scream that's so jaggedly loud it scrapes the roof of his mouth. The kid is on my nerves already, and the mom is getting uber-embarassed. She tries to hold his hand and says, "Uh-uh, Mummy says you're not supposed to do that," and the kid is just SCREAMING AT THE TOP OF HIS LUNGS RIGHT IN HER FACE, and still she keeps this retarded Mother Hubbard tone going on. She basically is now ASKING the kid to behave--"Please be good for mummy, Kevin, please?"
The kid is yelling and saying stuff like "Shut up mama" (no lie). I was trying to mind my own business but then the ****er came over to my desk in one of his insane runs around the office area, and he pulled on the paperwork I was currently working on. He knocked over all my ****, knocked it all out of order, and worst of all, his mom just looked at me like, "I'm sorry! I don't know what to do!"
So I yelled. And when I yell, I have a very unpleasant razorblade-spin going on. It's LOUD. I pounded my hand down on the desk as soon as the stuff fell, and then I screamed at the top of my lungs (in my uber-deep voice, no less). All I said was "HEY!!"
The kid froze. He dropped whatever he had in his hands and just stood stark still.
"YOU DON'T DO THAT! UNDERSTAND??"
He gave me a slow nod, still frozen up though. Then I calmed down and said, "Don't touch anything and listen to your mother. Got it?"
Slow nod.
The best part of this story is what happened last: his mother, a co-worker of mine, asked me the next day, "Oh my god, Rob...how did you ever get him to stop?!"
****ed up world we live in.
