Screen is black...

For some reason a friend of mine screen is always black...
the game play and all is normal like sounds and such but the visuals is all black.... and its not just esf its all other mods and half life itself...(no hes not using steam) i believe i had seen this problem before but cannot remember how to fix it so any suggestions? (he tried reinstalling already)

That problem usually occurs when the video mode you are trying to use, is either not compatible with your graphics device - or is not configured properly/is causing an error somewhere. Try using other video modes at stable resolutions, and see what happens.

hehe ... I thought these possibilities first:

1.: his screen can handle the resolution he chose in HL menu (maybe he switched to a worse screen) ... he should try 640*480 once

2.: he downloaded a tool which set the screen frequenzies to a fixed count and the screen can't handle such a frequenzy in this resolution (maybe he switched the screen (again ))

3. as grOOvy said ... he should try another videomode
OpenGL --> Direct 3D
Direct 3D --> OpenGL

4. he should try other 3D games to be sure that the video card hasn't any problems

5. he should look for his GPU frquenzies ... if it's overclocked, he should change it back and try again
