VR/3D Controller for your Sony PS3
Lately Virtual Reality/3D game control devices have been all the rage. Wii Remote or various VR gloves come to mind.

But while Wii Remote is good at tracking your 3D hand movements, basically that?s it. VR Gloves can capture a wider array of control gestures, but they are very inconvenient to use. Just think of putting them on and off everytime you want to play a game.

What if you could have a device that is as easy to use as Wii Remote, but could capture all you palm, finger and hand movements? Wouldn?t it be cool?

Sony thinks so too and may soon have a 3D PS3 game controller to prove it. At least that?s what their patent application for ?Hand-held computer interactive device? describes:

This 3D game controller is designed to be held in your hands, is able to capture all your palm and finger movements and transmit them as commands to your PS3 or Vaio PC. You can pick up and manipulate various objects on screen just by squeezing and relaxing your fingers.

The device is even able to give you a tactile feedback. That is, you will be able to ?feel? when you pick up or press something on the screen.

Add to it a few gyroscopes and 3D hand motion detection technology described in previous Sony patents and they may have a perfect 3D game controller for your PS3 soon.

This sounds awesome. I wonder if it'll be for specialised games (ala EyeToy) or if it'll have practical use in other games (SIXAXIS)?

This is the bomb especially in strategy games, but not so potencial as in pc..
Could be pretty good actually.

I dare to say this could win the keyboard+mouse @ computer on ps3 with 60" HDTV in RTS Games :)

Looks both good and bad. I'd imagine buying new ones would be expensive which makes me wonder if they'd be sold in pairs or not. Also, turning/jumping/crouching/strafing/lock on would be hard to do. Makes me doubt it would be a main controller for games so I'm guessing it would be used for specialised games. Could be fun though.

People should just hurry up with full VR though dammit. D:

It's inevitably going to be compared to the Wiimote, but if you read through the specifics it can do a lot more, both in terms of features and technologies: motion sensing, pressure sensing, more realistic force-feedback than 'rumble'. Whereas the Wii has the remote and the nunchuck, the gloves have 12 flexible pads. They share motion/tilt-sensing but the SIXAXIS controller did that anyway. Now they're adding to it.

I'd like to see some really creative uses for this, like disabling a virtual bomb, or a beat-em-up that could differentiate between punches, chops, blocks palm-strikes etc based on the position of the fingers and the angles of the gloves etc. Real VR stuff. How about Black & White with real hand-gestures, picking up rocks and throwing fireballs?

And thus, you movitvated me to get a ps3

Looks really nifty. Only problem is, can they pull it off right? This thing can skyrocket ps3 sales.

Lol. Please tell me their not actually going to produce this thing. It would be a PR disaster.

How so? Peripherals = winnar, and this looks like the most advanced one yet.

The idea looks quite promising, but two large concerns come, immediately, to mind:

1) How many titles would end up utilizing this peripheral?
2) How much would something as complex as this controller set me back when something as "simple" as a Wii remote and Nunchuk set me back by $70?

I wouldn't say it's going to blow the Wii out of the water just yet. That will hinge on how this peripheral is used, as well as its price tag, I imagine.

I'd also like to see it used in a demonstration; seeing the concept on paper is one thing... but, much like with the Wii remote, I'd choose to approach this with a bit of skepticism, first.

Interesting

But I do wonder how long it will take for some obscure company to sue them for copyright infringement?

I'm totally seeing this thing cost like... two hundred bucks, and have like two or three games utilizing it. Sort of like all of the periphs Raven mentioned.

I hope by obscure company you mean Nintendo.

This honestly just seems like a half ass attempt to regain some of the developers they lost to Nintendo's innovation. Of course I can't be sure through some 2D drawing, for all I know, it'll completly rock ass. But it seems fishy to me...

It's over $9000~!!

:p

This tech looks pretty nifty. It looks like it could be a real contender for the Wiimote. Let's see Sony not screw this up for a change.
