problem with HL after new drivers

I am not sure whether this thread belongs here, because it is after all a problem with HL.
anyway HL/ESF worked fine for me until today, after installing new nvidia graphic drivers. when i activated HL the screen just turned off -_-. as i returned to the old drivers, the problem persisted
so anyone has the same type of experience? cause all my other games work fine except for this.

try to set your Video mode to OPENGL. that should work.

thats gonna be tough considering that i cant even enter the game to change the video settings. any way to change it from outside the game?

Re-install Half-Life and ESF, go back to your old drivers, then turn on OpenGL mode and install the new drivers.
I think that should work.
