PIZZA CAN BE classed as a vegetable – at least according to a decision made by the US Congress. Who knew?
American lawmakers have ruled that the amount of tomato paste in pizza sauce means that pizzas can be counted as a vegetable.
The bizarre move, which was decided in a vote on the annual spending bill for the Department of Agriculture, happened for purely political reasons.

well actually .... in cooking terms it's classified as a vegetable since it's used for its savory taste and isn't sweet. a lot of fruits are classified this way actually.

that's why u hear ppl call it a vegetable, cuz in cooking terms it is; technically it is the fruit of a tomato plant though

edit:

And people still wonder why America is so economically ****ed... Congress: "Pizza is a vegetable, derp!"

I wonder how many hours they sunk into deciding this.

Pizza is as vegetable as chicken soup is meat >.>

Just because you make a salad, that doesnt mean the salad turns into a vegetable. Its a frigging salad.

Are these guys really in charge of a nation?

I don't know if I want foods like these banned just because they are unhealthy if you eat too much, but using this as an excuse is absolutely ridiculous. They will bust their ass to appease frozen food company interests over parents' interests, but won't dare tax the millionaires who own these companies any higher.

Yeah but obesity and diabetes doesn't.
Yeah, but that's where self control comes in. Something that HAS to be learned sooner or later. Parents need to step up in kids lives if these kidns of issues are ever going to be resolved, and not let the tv/schools raise the kids for them.

Exactly why I wonder why people think more government meddling in everything is a good thing.

Welcome to the Codex Alimentarius, where, from the trivial to the critical, IMF decisions on food supersede domestic laws without people's voice or vote in the matter.

Its not government that's the problem its a government that doesn't govern in the interest of it's people. The only reason this **** got through is because lobbyists commanded it so. You want a functional government? Put a tight leash on special interest groups and make everything transparent.

I think Cuc has problems realizing that the government is there because the people elected them. Guess what? It's your own faults you have a terrible system with next to zero regulation. The free market will not save you from corruption or megacorporations taking the place of small businesses.

I'm guessing this is a "jab" at the way my country is governed. Which is fine and all.
Just like to point out that economically were not doing bad, and pizza isn't in the vegetable department.

I don't think that's what he meant at all... It seemed like he was saying that he disliked his government making stupid decisions like deciding pizza is a vegetable, and then extending one stupid decision to include all government decisions.
