Newbie for Modeling/Skinning

I'm pretty new to the modeling and skinning scene. I see that there are some Gurus here that have a wide array of talent. Was wondering if I could get some advice for doing my first model. Where can I get Milkshape from.. if that is the program I am to be using. And what should I use for skinning? Any and all help would be really helpful. Thanks

I use photoshop for skinning, if u want freeware, try use gimp,
