Open Steam, click on the "My Games" tab and right-click on any game, click "Options" the click on the "Local Files" tab then click on the "Defragment cache files".

Is that what you were looking for?

Game settings maybe?.

I remember you mentioning at some point that you are using software mode and that you apparently don't have a gfx card that supports open gl (and judging by the quality of some of the screen shots of esf that you have taken in the past). Probably should look at upgrading your computer if that's the case.

I use to play esf with a mx440, plays ok. Depending on what type of memory your mainboard uses (DDR I'm assuming) I think you should go purchase more memory for your pc. If you're system is low on memory, I'd recommend going for an upgrade to 1GB or more if you can afford it (Depending on your current pc setup).

14. Try to defrag your hard disk every 2 weeks, this helps alot for having better H.D.D performance.
Defragging this often will decrease the life span of your hdd. Only defrag when deemed nessacary (Analyze before doing so to check if you need to defrag) or once every 2 months at the most.

I would higly suggest upgrading your pc then if it's really that bad.
or get a better video card :/
With the way his system is now from what I am thinking his specs may be from the sounds of things, a new gfx card would be bottlenecked by his cpu/memory.

Sounds to me like your steam games lag ingame, don't run smoothly. Well here is what I suggest: Do a complete defragment of your HDD, clean up your disk a little, delete large games you no longer play, it could be because of lack of memory. Also, close any programs that might be running in the background. As for upgrading your PC, I don't think it's neccessary for a game like ESF, since it is made on the HL engine, and Half-Life ran smoothly even on my old Pentium 1. It's true that ESF is a game that requires more RAM and stuff than HL, but not that much. Hope this helps.

Just curious, you say steam is a resource hog, what makes you believe this?

I have found that steam uses very little resources, it sounds like either you have many steam windows open at once and are trying to play, or you have way too many background applications running.
You could try disabling those like mentioned above, you could also try doing a boot time defrag to clean your page file and other system protected files, you could use the windows classic interface (if you are using XP).
But I think background apps are your biggest enemy. You could increase your swap file too, if it is too small, set it to 3.5 times your ram (if you have 256mb ram set page to 896mb)
There are many things you can do to "clean" your system up.
Your virus software could even be slowing you down.
Adobe, Real Player, Quicktime and other things as well, Desktop Theme enhancement software especially.

Also, I don't remember if you told us or not, but what kind of internet connection are you using, maybe you could test it with speed test site like
www.testmy.net
or any similar service. How reliable/dependable is your internet service provider?

Let us know if any of these things seems to lead you toward a solution.

Steam will ALWAYS lag at least a little bit. You can't change that. For example, even in Offline Mode, the first time you run a steam game after you reboot, it will take at least 45 seconds for the game to load, if not more. At least for me. I find that WON lags much less, while the game is the same. But I'm not getting into it, uh uh.
