My CD key cant be used on the VALVe system?

By the "hard way" I assume you have a pirated copy.
You will need to purchase a copy of the game, and then you will have your own CD Key.
It's not very expensive at all, I bought my Half-Life copy off the internet for less than 10 USD.
You could probably even get it for less than that if you look around.

search for the game at any of the above mentioned places and buy it legit. Doing it this "hard way" and attempting to cheat the system hurts those who actually used money to buy the game...
