If I had it my way... I would get the most expensive and best graphicly supported computer currently in public purchase and access. But, reality forces me to stay in the 500 to 1000 range :(

I have spent $4000 in the past for a PC.

$3000 for my 80386DX2 rig. (Woot 1993)
$4000 for my CX486DX2 rig. (Woot 1994)
$1600 for my Pentium 1 rig. (YAY COLLEGE! 1996)
$200 for my Pentium 2 rig. ( Yay for being poor! 1999 )
$600 for my current Nforce2 AthlonXP Barton core . . . :)

I made the last two by myself, did the PII for a freind who later broke it, then I bought it off of him and got it running in about 10 minutes :p

This current machine is a WIP, I still need to add a killer video card.

Building your own is not neccisarily cheaper, I reused alot of parts to come in under my original $350 budget. I've built upon that for the last year, adding a faster and bigger HD and more ram.

First computer I bought was in the $1,000+ range.

The computer I'm on now I custom built this summer for about $500..

new case
new mobo (ABit KD7-Raid)
Athlon 2200+ XP
512 megs DDR Ram (400mhz)
GeForce FX 5600 Ultra (256 meg model)

I was able to save some money, because I had my existing 17" monitor and 120 gig hard drive (although I had to buy another 120 gig drive recently due to anime taking over my other one -_-)

It's fast enough for most of the stuff I do (casual gaming, web/c++ programming, video editing, running zillions of anime torrents), so I'm happy with it. :p

But to answer the question, it would depend on what I was buying the system for. If it was for gaming, I would go for the $1,500+ range.

If it was for more casual things, I would stay in the $1,000- range.

I would spend as much as it takes to get the system I want.
I of course would take it into consideration, but most times when I buy my PC's (in my life i'v bought 2) they usually cost about $4000+ (keeping in mind I bought this PC like 4 years ago or so). The laptop I designed for myself will cost me about $1600, etc.

Whatever it takes to get the system I want :)

Money...Got none.

Too Lazy, job-less, family-less, and too 15 to care about getting a computer...

I typed all this becuase I have a good family, I care, I'm 17, very active and have alot of money with a good job...(hypocracy is fun..Yes?)..

I can respond to posts here and get on the internet using my "Krazy Psycic powers"...and us school computers too;)

Well I think I'd spend about less than $500 on my base comp. but then later ill upgrade.

The one I'm eyeing right now:
Athlon 2600+ XP
512 mb RAM
128 Radeon 9200
120 Gig HD

P.S. go to Tiger Direct if you want a cheap one.

Eehm lol? 10 drives? wtf? o_O Anyway i spend about 600 bucks on this one and its still running smooth even though its not top of the line. I'm really suppised about the number of no crashes i've had. I mean thees are my specs:

Asus motherboard (no idea about the type)
P4 2.4 ghz
512 mb 333 mhz ddr ram
GF 4 Ti 4200 64 mb (AGP8X)

Now thats not top of the line and i'm planing on getting a new state of the art vid card soon. But it runs so damn smooth. I mean my boot time is seriously 7 seconds. its crasy.
