Then, you're missing out too, it did actually have a strong story told out through scripted sequences and the scientists, possibly the strongest in an FPS at the time. At the end it was more about story and left the ending open for Half-Life 2 which is good because there's a lot of loose ends and unanswered questions. Play through Half-Life or HL: Source or the story of HL2 won't make much sense.
Half Life 2 has great everything, it has no flaws, no weakspots, and it doesn't require a high-spec computer. To be honest the 'story' of Halo (PC) left me cold, and that's why I voted for Half-Life 2.
Don't worry, I DID get to playing through Half-Life eventually, otherwise I wouldn't have been able to judge it, heh. While it did have a good plot for fps's of it's time, it was pretty lacking compared to some of the stuff today (such as Halo 1; I felt it did have a better story) You only got snippets from scientists, and there were no consistent characters, you would just meet little NPC clone Dr. Kleins, NPC clone Barneys, and watch as they die (or you kill them yourselves), none of them brought anything interesting to the table. The lack of real dialogue or character development, or even a specific goal (your goal: survive and escape) lead to a sort of Devil May Cry plot situation where, eventually, I was running around tunnels killing monsters with absolutely no idea where I was going or why. Just to keep going. I swear I was paying attention the whole time, and honestly? I have no idea why I hopped into a portal to Xen, or how I knew where to go from there.
HL2 really seems to blow this out of the water though. It seems like you have actual direction, and cause. There are characters surrounding you with actual depth and development to them, and the story itself is like a mystery that unfolds, sort of like HL1, but with far more layers to it, and more clear-cut goals.
