I first saw this from the VERC collective, when a user asked if the German version of HL2 would be modified like the first. I thought that to be strange, since I had no idea the game was modified for Germany.
Upon searching both the Internet and the Half-Life 1 source code, I found that due to content restrictions, the German version of Half-Life 1 was modified to replace human models with robots, gibs with machine parts, blood with oil, and so on.
Right about now you're probably wondering why I'm posting this, since I've answered the question the thread title implies, but I'm even more curious now.
What does this look like? I've never seen any pictures of this modified version, nor do I have any of the alternate files referenced in the source code, since I have the English version.
I figured this would be a good place to ask, since this community is pretty nationally diverse. Some users on these forums live in Germany, so they'd probably have the German version. If it's really like this, post pictures please! I'm curious! :)

Sure thing, Im German and i dont understand that stuff anymore either.

We got 2 differnet kind of agencys witch looks into games before they come onto the German Marked.

The USK is giving Games the Recommended Age Symbol, like good for 12,14,16,18 of Ages.

Then there is the "EVIL" BPjM , witch gets the Games out of the Marked once tehy are in the Stores, cause they could have dramatic stuff where kiddies should not see.
And the Stores have to follow the Law of the BPjM, where says NO Advertising for that game.
The Game can only be sold to peoples of the Ages 18+.
And the Game HAS to be under the Counter.
-----------
The Difference between DOOM 3 and Half-Life is,
In Half-Life you can shoot and kill HUMANS and that isnt Recommended for the German Audience.
While in DOOM 3 you kill MONSTERS and stuff like that.
Kill Humans = BAD, EVIL
Kill Monsters = Nice, Good

Like that young Gamers cant think of killing Humans is something GOOD.

hmm weird

German system works like this:
The USK checks the game. If it gets a seal "16+" or "Not for youth" (=18+) the BPjM cannot stop it from being advertised.
If it gets no age seal from the USK in the first place, the BPjM checks it out, anyway.

And, of course, the BPjM can be asked to check a game out.
But because of the recent changes the BPjM is now more to rely on the USK, because if the USK seals something "18+" it is unlikely that this game is "touched" by the BPjM.

(FarCry was an exception, because it was later on discovered that you could turn the german version into int. version via changing cfg stuff. This makes the content equal to the int. version, which means that the BPjM can take actions. Afterwards a new german FarCry version with changed code was published, to which you could no longer apply these config changes, and that's why the BPjM didn't "touch" it )

The german version of HL1...
When I first played HL1 it was US version, and I liked it. Some years later I had to format and used a GER install. When I walked around, seeing robots shooting at me I was kinda confused. It just didn't feel right :/

the talking sounds of the soldiers were changed to a german robot voice which was sometimes hard to understand.and when a security guard or scientist died there werent just falling to earth,no they sit down and shake their heads.there wasnt any human blood at all.well the thing with the robots is the same kind of censoring they did on turok:dinosaur hunter for the n64 they changed all humans to robots there too.bpjs is so goddamn evil.

I actually remember hearing about that. And the German version of a Contra game had the bad guys replaced with robots. Kinda odd. Glad I live in the States, sounds like BPjM is way worse than the FCC!!

oh yeah right in US you have to be 21, here in germany 18.

But i think they changing alot of that LAW stuff, cause couple years ago,
a student went crazy and brought a shootgun to school and shot other students and teachers and killed himself then.

Because of that, lots of people and the BPjM gives Games and Movies the Fault.
Casue when peoples play games and see they have to kill Humans they think its good and have ti do this in real life. Not with ROBOTS cause they not real...
Yet...

The only thing you have to be 21 for in the U.S. is to drink. You can buy R rated movies and Mature rated games at 17. You cannot buy 'porn' until you're 18.

The FCC, Federal Communications Commission monitors what happens on public TV, and radio. They only censor the things that would be considered offensive to people depending on the time of day. For example, I believe South Park is only showed after 9:00 P.M. They also went on a rampage after the whole Janet Jackson boob incident and sued a few companies, because the Superbowl was always considered a family event. But when you can watch the full uncut and unedited version of South Park: Bigger, Longer and Uncut with f' words, penises and all on CC at midnight then you know things are pretty flexible.
They haven't ever been censoring things much until recently, they are the same Federal Commission that makes sure all the games and movies have the ratings and such. It's really the insane Christian parents that push for things like this, it pisses us all off, but sometimes a little regulation is needed. Even after the Columbine High School shooting in '94 (I think it was 94), there wasn't a big outcry for censorship, even though some people blamed it on Doom, and Quake (everyone's pickin on Carmack). And then GTA3 came out, there was a lot of *****ing, but the government still never did anything, all major bills that would effect the gaming industry were shot down. With the exception of the rating system, which didn't affect much in terms of kids being able to get their hands on mature rated games.

Man, the same stuff happens here in America. Just recently I heard someone killed their friend and blamed it on playing Hitman, a video game where you... well, be a hitman.
This just makes me mad. It's incredibly obvious that the kid needs mental help, and was looking for a scapegoat. What better thing to blame it on than a video game!
Hopefully our stuff will never get censored like that... if I have to play HL2 with robots as players and pink fuzzy pillows as weapons, I dunno what I'm gonna do. o_o

I seriously doubt the government would go that far. We're called the 'country with the most freedoms' for a reason (no, I'm not bragging).

It's suprising though, the German company, Crytek gave us the great game that is FarCry, and another German company released Soldner, which was fun as well.

I don't really know how these things go, but can they edit everything in a game to their liking then? Doesn't that they're "breaking" the copyright of the game or whatever?

The organizations that set these standards don't edit the game themselves, they make the developer do it.
And Tassadar, I was joking. :p
