Meh. I was a beta tester for FFXI, and played for awhile after release.

It is interesting, and decent--at first. Then, little things start bothering you.

Like, how monsters are recycled over and over. You end up fighting 50 different kinds of "Bats" with the same graphical model. Sometimes they change the colors, but not most of the time.

Level 1-5 "Crappy Bunny"
Level 6-10 "Bunny"
Level 11-15 "CHOU Bunny"
Level 16-20 "Ruiner of Worlds Bunny"

You know? It gets old. Also, there's not a LOT of character customization, in creation or otherwise. You easily identify people's classes by their outfits, because there is basically only one good outfit for a class, at any given level.

There are no real 'choices,' you'll see White Mages running around in identical Robes, occasionally an Elven one (harder to get),

And one of the supposed 'features' of the game is the conquest system of controlling different parts of the game. It's not really deep.. The team who wins more battles while under "Signet" for a certain period of time, gains 'control' of the region.

(the only real benefit is, you get crappy shops with 'Neat Items' (useless) from that region you control) as well as somewhat useful conquest items from the guards.

Overall, FFXI is an okay game to try for awhile, but it doesn't have lasting power like some other MMORGs.

What took some of the fun out of playing it, is they released it in Japan more then a year before it came out worldwide,

So you're a newbie, and 50000 Japanese people have already played through the game and mastered everything.

I never played/won't buy it. Final Fantasy is a single player game, with single player depth and single player characters, frankly I can't see squre deepening the game to the extent of making it a worthy mmorpg

well my sister got it and she loves it! i must say that when i saw it i couldnt deny that she loved it... looks very good... i specially like the magic and the small movie frequences that uses to be in the other Final Fantasy sp games... the team system is good i think... the thing about the monsters is bad yes... but they did that in SWG, DAOC, WoW(i have tryed the alpha so i know how the mobs looks like), AND SO ON!!! almost ALL MMORPG games got like 50 names to 1 single model... :) they have just resized and recoloured it :) its probabaly becouse that if they had to make all new models it would be a really HUGE GAME becouse u are moving around in a big world and that requires lotsa monsters :D well overall i think it looks good but i wont play it becouse i have stopped playing MMORPG games... :) i have spend TOO MUCH MONEY in that **** :D if u are a huge fan of FF it would probably be REALLY nice for u :D not sure for the other guys who have never tryed FF :)

I have it, and I play it everday. The fool who said the JPN got it a year ago is a bad thing, why is it a bad thing? It's a great thing! They know how to do everything, you can ask them questions and they can help you with quests and missions that english players aren't strong enough. And they are great people, they usually will help you out.

FFXI is a great MMORPG, I wasn't going to get it at first either because I thought FF isn't an online type game, but they have beautifully made the transition over from Single to Multi.

There are creatures with the same model yes, but what MMORPG doesn't have that? You can't expect the creators of these games to completely mesh skin and animate 100 different animals for every single area especially when they game already consists of over 200 areas to visit. Then they also have to make quests, model the armor, cities, sprites, everything. You can't possibly really expect them to have that kind of time. That's just not reasonable.

And the thing I like most about FFXI is it has planned out environments. Everything is made some way because it was supposed to be. I can't tell you how annoying it is to be running through an endless plain of random hills and mountains just because the Creators of the game wanted to have a big world map. FFXI makes a big world map, but it makes it fun. It's not random, it's planned, and you can clearly see that while playing the game.

That's my two cents, FFXI is one of the greatest MMORPG's I have played, especially combining two languages so well, and being able to support PC and Ps2 players on the same servers.

You didn't have to call me a fool, when YOU'RE WRONG.
"What MMORG doesn't have that?" Well, try ALMOST ALL?
I've played EverQuest, Anarchy Online, Earth & Beyond, Ragnarok Online, Ultima Online, Final Fantasy XI, City of Heroes, Planetside, Knight Online, Lineage 2, and a few others--and only one or two of them recycles models.

As for the Japanese already gotten it, beaten it, mastered everything so nothing would ever be "the first," (at least, for anyone non-Japanese) it IS a bad thing. I can't expect the creators to make different models for different monsters? Um, apparently I CAN expect it, because I can and DO expect it.

Ive seen enough mediocre reviews to steer clear from it. I may ship out some dough for a fps or rpg if they were gonna be fun for a few weeks. But at least i dont have to pay monthly for them.

Ok for the what, 7 gigs that FFXI Takes up, it could have had some different models and looks, maybe some more customization? I've played just about every MMORPG as Alea and you might find a monster cloned looking different on everygame, but not throughout the whole game. What makes a game heroic if all your fighting are catapillers and little onions with legs? Wow, what fun. Throughout the whole game you have to look at the same crap with different landscapes. OH maybe different weather.

Over all this game isn't worth buying. period

I would buy this game... Well, I do have the game but not cause of the game itself but because of the HDD (for ps2). I would play this game... but $12+ for a month? Haha, you gotta be kidding me. Thats way too much for any game in my opinion... you play it for 10 months its $120+ wasted right there for a game that you spent enough money on already. Its pathetic. I'll stick to the first player versions. Thats my opinion...

MMORPG's are trash, and for Square to make one is really very disappointing.

It's funny too because in those games I played, they had a few areas, but each area had about 200 areas where the same monster would spawn and nothing else.. that's very good yeah. Can't imagine why I wouldn't want that.

And thank you for not justifying your answer in the least? You could have at least said why you can expect it. Because I really don't see any reason why you would. They already give you a great game with the ability to communicate with another language. Give at least some reason for debate before just saying anything. It's no fun if you just say "Because I said so!"

I don't have to justify my expectations for games. I expect MMORGs to have different, unique monsters. They do not create (usually) copies of the same locale, so why with monsters? The point is, that they DIDN'T 'give' me anything, or a 'great game,' and the translations are terrible and ineffective, both ways.

The answers are too formal, and they expect you to string them together, and when you do that, it makes no sense.

Question, "Do you know where it is?" "Locale--Valkurm Dunes," translated into Japanese kanji, and back again turns out like, "Valkurm Dunes, where is do you know?" Doesn't make -any- sense whatsoever, and ends up confusing them.

This creates two cliques of players in the game, especially upon release--the Real, non-newbie players, (i.e., the japanese) who have already beaten the game basically, mastered every job/class, explored every area, gotten the best equipment--and the newbie international players. And as such, nothing is really 'new,' which is a huge factor to some people in MMORGs--being one of the first to find, achieve, explore something.

Well there are new things, that's really why you are paying them. They just added Dynamis, that's new, now they just added a PvP type sport, that's new. They are still adding lots of new things, new equipment, new spells, new areas. Yeah the Jpn have done alot of things but it's an MMORPG, there will always be new things.

To be frank, FFXI sucks bigtime. Not only are enemy models recycled, but I have CLONES of myself running around in-game. Creepy. Also, some of the armor models are recycled. Recently there was a petition asking to have this changed, but that never went anywhere.
Another issue is High lvls taking all the low-level monsters for money and fame, mostly because its just TOO DAMN HARD to get cash and/or fame otherwise. And instead of being rewarded for playing in parties, S-E makes it even more difficult to do so because character levels have to be spread out (low levels get less exp when paired with high-lvls, which it should be the other way around so ppl start rounding off the party's average level instead of having characters get farther and farther apart.) There are other things in the game that get annoying too, like white mage pandemonium (they are the only class fully dedicated to healing, and S-E doesn't make it easy for ppl to heal themselves in-game.)
To conclude, the game sucks, period. Waste of my $12.50/mo.

EDIT: and ANOTHER THING- I'm a weekend player, and all the ppl at my school play both weekends and weekdays. So when I've come back at the end of the week my friends are all level 50 and I'm still level bull****. none of this stuff is worth it.
