Atari is just pissing me off now, I could have probably coded a game way better than this if you gave me a few years. I strongly suggest anyone rent this game before they buy it.
Dragon Ball Z: Sagas was developed by Avalanche Software, Atari was just the game's publisher.

Chakra-X, You're a HUGE DBZ Fan, You're 14, You opinion on Dbz game's dont matter to me 0.o , why is it only you sticking up for this game >< Tell me 1 Great thing about this pile of doo doo....no offense =\ but this game.. is not worth renting or looking into by these post's -_-

Oh come on, im not a HUGE dbz fan, I dont even have a dbz avatar...

Well its obvously not the greatest DBZ game out there, but I just think it has potential. Ill put out a list of the good parts about this game that make me defend it and the cons of the game. Ahem..

The Good..

-You can teleport with any beam still charging and everything moves slow

-A lot of destructible terrain you can hit enemies into

-You can teleport in mid combo and still keep doing the combo, looks very DBz-ish when done right.

-You can combine the melee moves with the combo moves to make your own variations

-Great explosion graphics

-Fast paced combat

-Brolly has infinte Super Saiyan

- a beam's strength actually determines if it collides, gets vaporized, or goes through another beam

-One armed Gohan!

The Bad

-EXTREMELY short

-repetitive gameplay

-not a lot of replay value

-Glitchy

-Bland a lot of the times

-Super Saiyan takes too long (in normal mode and below) to get to and it only last for a short while, plus it shouldnt even be timed.

-Akward movement at times

-The Signature moves that are suppsoed to be beams are blasts

-No Big Bang, Spirit bomb, Kaioken, USSJ model, or "light grenade"

I dunno if people should necesssarily buy it, well at least not for 50 as i did...But renting it to try ur own hand at it.

I like how the eye candy and the map environments look, but the models aren't much to behold, and after hearing some of these comments about the gameplay...

Heh, it's DBZ, so I'll probably rent it or something anyway.

I feel pretty bad for the people who actually purchased this game for the full $50, especially when God of War, "the best action game for ps2," was released the same day.
DBZ: Sagas is 'decent' when you take a step back and dont compare it to other video games... If you look at it from the perspective of "It's a low-budget game with a small team that doesn't care or know anything about DBZ", it's not 'that' bad. I somewhat enjoyed playing through it, but only because I know who the characters represent and I have a good imagination to make it seem a little more involving. If I didn't follow DBZ and know all of the characters... Heh, no way I would be playing this game for more then 5 minutes. Like IGN says, "You'll stop playing faster than you can say 'Kamehameha!'"
What was really depressing is that I actually completed the game 100%.. Got all of the items and powerups, not one reward. Once you beat the game normally you earn this Pendulum mode that allows you to play through any of the levels with any character, including a few new unlockable characters... Unfortunetly, all of the characters play the same and all of their special attacks are just visual variations of eachother. The Special Beam Cannon and Kamehameha wave do the same exact thing, just that SBC has a swirly path -_- Ontop of that, most of those missions are so rediculously repeditive, you dont want to play through them with a different character. You can beat all of the bosses with just mashing between punch + kick (see Stupid Bosses: Exhibit A and B), and it's just a chore to take on multiple enemies with the poor lockon system. I'm not like "Yeah, I'm taking on 4 different sabamen, what a rush!" It's more like "Oh god... Every time I try to attack one the other hits me in the ****ing back, and my character moves like a frozen pile of jizz sliding uphill..."
It's so rediculously annoying. Fortunetly, once you get a little further in the game you can fire off like ~10 special moves before you have to recharge. See 4-5 enemies? No problem, just spam your generic special move until everything on the screen is dead :) It's actually more effective then ESF beam spamming because they actually slow down time for you so no one can kill you while you charge \o/
So, how about those unlockable levels? Oh, that's right, they didn't INCLUDE any secret levels. I dont think I would be at this level of dissatisfaction if they atleast included some cool unlockables when you beat the game. You have DBZ freaks that would beat this game 15 times over to play in an extra level with ssj3 goku or something. The unlockables they do include dont mean piss, unless you really enjoy playing as one armed gohan. It's amusing to see him pull off combos with a single arm.
But seriously, I think the main reason why everyone is so pissed is that Atari (yes, Atari SupaFighta, they do the PR) painted this fantasy sandbox that would allow us to play out our DBZ fantasies... Almost like GTA without the sex, drugs, and cars. I think it would be pretty damn awesome if i could get up and fly to random dbz locations on a huge seamless map and blow up ****... Level up, earn some original moves, learn new fighting styles.... That's (obviously) the complete opposite from what we got.. I dont know what type of sandbox Atari was describing, but the one we're playing in is a 15"x15" box filled with dirt, rocks, and chopped up worms.
Oh god, and the "Extras." They have a button dedicated to Extras on the main menu.. You would think, oh, I beat the game, I get some cool levels and videos! No, you can watch the videos that comprised the single player campaign... It's great, I enjoyed watching clips of the series so much the first time, I think i'm going to do it again :)
Putting the bashing aside, this game is somewhat decent if you lower your expectations to mod level... Imagine if you saw this as a free game on the internet being made by a small team. Would be like "cool, this game has potential, nice effects..."
Once you return to reality though, you'll realize this game isn't worth your $50... It's not worth your $3 to rent.. No, it's not even worth your 3 hours to illegally download. Do yourself a favor and stay far FAR away from this game. Buy something like God of War or TimeSplitters 3... Gitaroo Man is pretty nifty too, been having fun with that one.

I don't see why anyone would want this steaming load of garbage.

The only thing going for this is that it's DBZ. Therefore, you can pretty much guarantee that thousands of kids will buy this (NO MATTER HOW UGLY, DISGUSTING, HORRIBLE, NAUSEATING, AND STUPID IT IS) and that it'll make big bucks (NO MATTER HOW... IT IS).

If you want an action-adventure game, play Devil May Cry 3, or God of War.

If you want a DBZ game, play ESF. All Sagas is is basically a dumbed down version of ESF (and when I say dumbed down, I mean Leisure Suit Larry: MCL dumbed down, not MGS2 Very Easy dumbed down.).

This has to be THE worst thing that my beautiful PSTwo has had the disgrace to tire itself over, and to spin it round and round in it's pretty little CD case. I regret even renting this.

...Ignore my last post. I wouldn't be caught dead spending any amount of money on this game after watching those videos.

The only way I can put reason into that footage would be if the development team never once played through their own game before releasing it. That's just ridiculous.

Damn, that video makes the game look uder ****.

But, I had the PS2 version and the buttons were fine for me.. Ialso played it on normal-hard mode which disregards "stupid bosses" (tho they still cant fly by will..) Plus, the video only showed the combos you start out with, which are crappy ones.

However, joe's points on reptiness and shortness are true. I dont think the its comeplty the quality of the game that makes it non $50 worthy, but the length of the game. I too was pissed when I found that "extras" was just the same lil clips in tstory mode which i didnt like too much, but the prolounge wasnt too bad. And as he said also, only Dragonball Z fans would like this game.

It does annoy me that I paid $50 for a small game, id rather buy it for $20 used, cuz for me, this is the kind of game I would come back to play. Bandai is making something "based" on the concepts of sagas, so its said sagas 2 will probably never exist. hopefully bandai's version is better.

I just thought up ESF's advertising little gif movie.

Show small anamations of this, then say "Do you want to be stuck with STANDARD DBZ?" then place a small anamation of ESF, then say "Welcome to the next generation, backwards a few engines"

Biggest dissapointment of 2005. I was expecting Zone of Enders meets Grand Theft Auto not Army Men meets Frogger 3D.

To be honest, Raven, I wasn't expecting much more than it is. I mean COME ON... It's DBZ! Kids will buy it anyway! Who cares what kind of crap they shovel in it! Let the kids think they are hardcore gamers by not even taking damage from bosses.

I still feel sorry for anyone who bought it expecting that, though.

Why would you expect a crappy game just because it's associated with DBZ? Look at Budokai 3, they finally released a Dragon Ball Z game that everyone can enjoy, not just DBZ fanatics.
Either way, I'm pretty sure Avalanche wouldn't have shipped such a title if they had more time and money. Most video game developers dont go out and say, "Yes, I want to ship a peice of **** game, this is going to look great on my resume!" I'm sure they would have liked to finish up the game and add lots of features... Unfortunetly, this is probably the best they could do with their limited budget and time constraints.
Guess this gives me even more reason to work on ESF Beta 1.3. I have yet to see a decent SSJ transformation in a DBZ game besides Budokai 1. Would have been nice if they kept the machinima cutscenes, guess it was costing too much.

The thing is, I didn't expect a crappy game, I just didn't expect anything good. From the first time I saw shots of the game, I knew it wouldn't turn out that well.

About Budokai 3... meh. I never played it, so I can't say. It's not really Avalanche's fault, to be honest. A monster, MMORPG type DBZ game needs money, and with a lot of let-downs in the past with DBZ games (Budokai 2, however pretty it may look, was Budokai 1 under a shell, and now Sagas. Taiketsu [Or whatever it was] for GBA promised an awesome fighter, and look at what happened.) an investment like that might not work. Then again, they probably don't have the time, money, or the need to set up some monster servers for a DBZ MMO game. They have more things to be worried about than DBZ, as I'm sure DBZ is not their (and by their I mean the publisher Atari and the developers of all the games) top concern in the industry.

Dont just pick out the crappy DBZ games -_- What about Dragon Ball Z: Legendary Super Warriors, that game was pretty fun and had great graphics. I wonder why Atari wont push more money into developing decent DBZ games though... It's already a given that the game will be a best seller, would be a wise investment IMO.

The LOG games were fun and the Budokai games were better still, but if they had worked harder on Saga's then i'm sure they could've made it better still. They had a great premise, a great franchise (with a great following) and yet they still managed to screw it up. Just goes to show what can happen when you (don't) apply yourself.
