Logan's Super Special Ultimate Godlike Review
Last year, the assumed "Best DBZ Game Ever" was released to the public. However, it was far from the truth. The game featured too much ki-blasting, smaller arenas than expected even more of the same budokai music (excluding some of the really GOOD ones), no in-game transformations, allowing people to be SSJ4 Goku right at the start or even SSJ4 Gogeta, resulting in unbalanced fights, NO items hidden in the map like they originally promised, voice glitches upon voice glitches, stale cutscenes, and of course...1/2 of the characters had the exact same attacks.
Needless to say, the game was very...very...very bland. Sure the fighting style was unique, but the game mechanics overall prevented it from being a very fun experience. In fact, I'd say it was the worst new-age DBZ game. Thats right...worse than Budokai 2.
Finally Budokai Tenkaichi 2 was released a few days ago, and with all the hype building up, was this Tenkaichi done right?
Yes. It was.
Story
The storyline is done a little differently this time. We start off with the Saiyan Saga first, obviously, but this time we see just about every battle possible. The Saiyan saga alone was about 2 and 1/2 hours long to complete. Granted this was on EASY mode, but I'll touch on that later.
Ok. The Saiyan Saga is over. So...off to Namek now.
Lex Luther: WRONG!!!
Nope! The chain has been broken! You do not go to namek now. You go to the Tree of Might movie saga. Thats right...funimation found a way to stick the movies in the actual storyline, for this game at least since we know it's not possible in the actual anime. It's short due to the fact it's based off just a movie, but still...3 fights isn't bad.
Ok. NOW we're off to Namek.
Lex Luther: WRONG!!!
*shoots Lex*
Actually you're thrown into the next movie. Lord Slug! See the pattern here? Any movie that can possibly fit into the main storyline is placed there. It follows this pattern all throughout the game.
Saiyan Saga -> Tree of Might -> Lord Slug -> Bardock's Movie -> Frieza Saga -> Garlic Jr. Saga -> Cooler's Revenge -> Trunks Saga -> The Return of Cooler -> So on and so forth.
Just to give you an idea of just how long this game is, I'll tell you where I am now. I'm at the very end of Cooler's Revenge. Given the lost fights every now and then....it took me 8 hours. Thats right. EIGHT...HOURS... and I'm not even at the Trunks Saga yet!
Thats just how long this game is. Trust me...this is not a single-night's worth of gameplay. We're talking a few days here...of constant play. I'd say that the storyline part of the game competes with the average RPG of old at about 30-40 hours.
And before you ask, no. I'm not doing any of the side-quests. YES there are side-quests in this game!
Gameplay
The gameplay is so much better, but most of you already know that. Charged attacks, more melee, better AI, harder CPU, more combos, ect. Also, each character and each form has AT LEAST 2 special moves unique to them and only them.
Some special moves have more of a Budokai 3 feel to them, adding a special sort of cutscene. Also, really big special moves, such as a supercharged Spirit Bomb, 100% Deathball, Supernova, ect are powerful enough to destroy the map entirely, also adding a Budokai 3 cutscene where you see the explosion from the planet. You get a new map (the music doesn't change though) and it leaves everything in ruin.
Speaking of the maps, there's a pro and con. The pro is that the maps look nicer, there are MORE of them, and you can choose to start with the normal or destroyed version. The Con is that, dispite what people have told you, the maps aren't that much bigger than Tenkaichi 1's. In fact, I'd go so far as to say many are the same size as T1's.
Still, the maps are nicer this time. Also, when in Dueling mode, you can set the music to what you want, or leave it on Random like it was in T1. I suggest making use of this feature so you dont end up trying to have an epic 1 on 1 with serious characters on a dramatic map....and end up listening to something that belongs to a fight between Hercule and Yajirobe on Kami's Lookout.
Oh yes. Yajirobe is in this game, and trust me when I say he's actually very good.
However, like Yajirobe, there are some characters that just plain cannot fly in the show, and they made sure that sticks in this game. So what did they do? They made them "hover." You dont float, you just hover a bit and by trying to ascend into the air, you "climb." Its actually incredibly humerous, but a real pain if you're in a stage with very little ground to walk on, like the destroyed wilderness map.
Fights are more melee-intensive now, and it shows. However, it's not overpowered. For example, when you power up to MAX POWER mode, you can pull off an endless chain combo until MAX POWER wears off. However, it works for a while, but after a while the CPU or your Human opponent is able to get his blocks in. So you can't truely spam the same combo forever. You have to mix it up for true maximum damage.
*shoots the giant enemy crab*
Other Notes
-You can change to Japanese voices, but not Japanese music. However, the US music IS very good.
-Don't underestimate the characters that were weak in the show. Yajirobe, Roshi, Chioutzu, Yamcha, and even Android 19 kick unbelievable ass in this game.
-There is a massively high difference in skill level between difficulties 1, 2, and 3. I started off on difficulty 2 and had my ass handed to me on a golden plate. I went back to difficulty 1 and the computer was so sickeningly easy that it was laughable. If there's that much of a jump in difficulty between 1 and 2, then I suggest you practice in practice mode when you first start playing so you can start off on level 2. I'd hate to see how good level 3 is...
-Frieza is hard in this game this time. Expect to lose against him a good 2-3 times before finally winning in a good 1/2 of your fights against him.
-Bardock Pwns
-Turles Pwns
-Garlic Jr pwns
-Burter pwns (good god does he pwn)
-Frieza pwns
-Raditz does not pwn...he obliterates
-Nappa pwns
-Cui pwns
-EVERYONE ****ING PWNS!
-Buy this game. Now.
And thats the end of my review.
