::The Dry Stuff::

  • Developer: Crytek (Frankfurt)
    Publisher: Electronic Arts
    Director: Cevat Yerli
    Lead Designer: Rasmus Højengaard
    Engine: CryEngine 3
    Platform: PC, 360, PS3
    Release Date: Q2 2013

    ::Overview::
    [h=4]quote:[/h]
    Crysis 3 sees players take on the role of Prophet as he returns to New York, only to discover the city's been encased in a giant Nanodome created by the corrupt Cell Corporation. The New York City Liberty Dome is a veritable urban rainforest teeming with overgrown trees, dense swamplands and raging rivers. Within the Liberty Dome, seven distinct and treacherous environments become known as the Seven Wonders. Set in 2047, Prophet is said to be on a "revenge mission" after uncovering the truth behind Cell's motives for building the quarantined Nanodomes. "The citizens were told that the giant citywide structures were resurrected to protect the population and to cleanse these metropolises of the remnants of Ceph forces. In reality, the Nanodomes are CELL's covert attempt at a land and technology grab in their quest for global domination. With Alien Ceph lurking around every corner and human enemies on the attack, nobody is safe in the path of vengeance. Everyone is a target in Prophet's quest for retribution.

::The Ceph::
[h=4]quote:[/h]
The Ceph, short for Cephalopods, also known as the Charybdis, are a group or race of technologically advanced aliens and represent the primary antagonists of the Crysis series. They are hostile towards humans and are waging what appears to be a war of extermination against them. Their probable origin is likely to be in the Triangulum or M33 Galaxy, located in the constellation Triangulum, 4 million light years from Earth; a beacon was discovered to have been sending a signal into that part of the sky. They have been on Earth for at least 2 million years in a dormant state until Jacob Hargreave in 2020 set in motion events in Tunguska that led to the Korean People's Army awakening one of their installations.

::Crysis::
During Crysis, the Ceph (though not referred in name) were first "officially" discovered in the Lingshan Islands by a CIA-tracked archaeological expedition led by Dr. Rosenthal, who had unearthed fragments of their technology in other parts of the world. Subsequently, the North Korean government became aware of the alien technology and dispatched the Korean People's Army to secure the Lingshan Islands in an attempt to appropriate it. In turn, the United States, after being urgently contacted by Dr. Rosenthal, also sent American military forces backed by the USS Constitution carrier group, in for a rescue mission, and to prevent the KPA from acquiring the artifacts. Inevitably, the Koreans under General Kyong succeeded in activating the structure (which Kyong called a "temple") inadvertently awakening the Ceph, who shortly thereafter deployed an "ice sphere" which flash froze most of the island and killed everything that was within range.
Robotic Ceph forces overwhelmed US and NK forces remaining in Lingshan, forcing them to evacuate; the US sanctioned a limited nuclear strike against the ice sphere, but instead of dispersing, the sphere absorbed the nuclear explosion and expanded, prompting the Ceph to send a massive counterattack that sank the entire US fleet.

This particular army was composed almost entirely of robotic units or heavily armored weaponized "exosuits". Weapons seemed to follow a pattern of ambient energy absorbtion: practically all units had the ability to drain nearby electrical sources, and more direct weapons came in the form of freeze rays and high-powered icicle launchers, as well as energy-based explosives and more "traditional" energy beams.

::Crysis 2::
The Ceph in Crysis 2, which still relate to the aliens from the original games, appear to employ different strategies and technologies than the group at Lingshan, as well as having a different morphology. They seem to have gone so far as to actually mimic human combatants, relying of more "conventional" forces such as dedicated infantry, armor and air units. They have replaced their hovering trooper automatons with cybernetic soldiers composed of what appears to be an alien being encased in a suit of armor that grants it mobility, agility, great strength as well as a diversity of weapons. These weapons appear to function via some kind of projected energy; however they might as well be a sort of projectile, since they are referred to as "shells" in Crysis: Legion.
These soldiers come in Grunt, Stalker, and Heavy classifications, as well as some Command variants. Their Hunters and Scouts have been replaced with huge, heavily-armed tripod tanks known as Pingers, and gunships armed with missiles and rapid-fire weapons that mimic human military helicopters. Troop deployment is done via the use of specialized dropships, to transport and deploy troops via drop-pods.

The Ceph that emerged from underneath New York City also deployed what appeared to be a weaponized plague against the inhabitants. This "spore" was invariably fatal upon even the most limited contact, and was generally deployed via massive mechanical "spears" that emerged from underground, disseminating a thick cloud of nanite-viruses into the air. Crysis: Legion, however, reveals that the "Manhattan Virus" functioned as far more than a bioweapon for the aliens. Most of their technology was covered in receptor proteins for the spore; it is described as an "antibody system" that makes a desired area of the Earth suitable for alien habitation by eliminating hazardous macrofauna (humans), and the Nanosuit 2 was eventually modified to re-program the spore to attack the alien biology.

Their purpose is also expanded upon in the novel. Hargreave speculates that, since the Ceph have such advanced technology that can create practically anything they can think of, their sole interest is in the things they can't think of, namely surprising proteins and organisms that evolution gives rise to over millions of years of adaptation. If this is the case, then the Ceph stationed on Earth are only an automated system programmed to wake up every once in while to scout the planet for scientific data that might be useful.

::C.E.L.L.::
[h=4]quote:[/h]
C.E.L.L. is run by the CryNet corporation and were under contract from the US Department of Defense and deployed to New York City to police the evacuation in place of the military, who were currently fighting the Ceph invasion. C.E.L.L. is considered a brutal and corrupt organization, where its soldiers are increasingly trigger-happy and unprofessional as the story unfolds.[1] C.E.L.L. Operatives are witnessed killing Force Recon Marines, and assisting in the "sanitation" of infected civilians.
C.E.L.L. operators are antagonistic towards the Ceph, but also antagonistic towards Alcatraz. Under the orders of C.E.L.L. Commander Dominic Lockhart, C.E.L.L. operators pursue and engage Alcatraz (thinking he is Prophet) in an attempt to return the Nanosuit 2 to CryNet founder, Jacob Hargreave. Eventually this antagonism is based solely on Alcatraz's efficiency at killing C.E.L.L. soldiers, leading to Commander Lockhart eventually ignoring the orders of Hargreave to assist and protect the wearer of the Nanosuit 2.

As witnessed by Alcatraz throughout the events of Crysis 2, C.E.L.L. troops are inept at fighting the Nanosuit 2.0 and Ceph in small-scale firefights, but make dangerous opponents when encountered in large numbers.

C.E.L.L. was later rescinded of its authority by the Department of Defense and US Marines were deployed in their place under the command of Marine Colonel Sherman Barclay. C.E.L.L. forces, loyal to Commander Lockhart and the Board of Directors, splintered from Jacob Hargreave's control and were intent on hunting down Alcatraz. Given C.E.L.L.'s relinquish of their power, some C.E.L.L. units were placed under military arrest as seen in Grand Central Terminal where three C.E.L.L. soldiers were placed behind bars.

The remainders of C.E.L.L. were in the headquartered on Roosevelt Island, where they tried to capture Alcatraz and protect Lockhart, who was then ultimately killed by Alcatraz. The former C.E.L.L. units still loyal to Hargreave were given the order to aid Alcatraz's ex-filtration after the Ceph attacked the island as it prepares to self-destruct; during the chaos, a computerized PA announced to C.E.L.L. that their "employee duties are terminated." It is presumed that many if not all C.E.L.L. personnel that did not evacuate perished from the destruction of Roosevelt Island.

::Laurence "Prophet" Barnes::
[h=4]quote:[/h]
A seasoned veteran of the Gulf Wars and Operation Enduring Freedom during the war on Al-Qaeda, he spent years in schooling before joining the US Army. Eventually, during a drug-related raid, he finally decided it was wrong to kill civilians indiscriminately and put both of his CIA advisors in the hospital. When he was reprimanded by his superiors, he lashed out at them too. Since he was to be put in Leavenworth, he figured he should "really earn it" and proceeded to beat up everyone in the room. At the maximum-security prison, he received some documents sent by Jacob Hargreave. Barnes was set free, but in return he had to do a favor for Hargreave; he was the first soldier to try on the Nanosuit 1.0, where he met Nathan Gould. Later at Lingshan, after he was temporarily MIA, Nomad, being the second-in-command, temporarily took Prophet's role as squad leader. However, because of Nomad's rank, Strickland assumed complete mission control.

::Crysis::
Prophet leads Raptor Team through their first few objectives, the first being to find Aztec who was separated from the rest of the squad only to be informed by Jester and Nomad that Aztec was torn to shreds (along with a North Korean patrol) by an unknown hostile; he then incinerates his suit via remote and orders the two to stay on mission.
He later regroups with Nomad, Psycho, and Jester, who have made a startling find: a boat completely frozen solid in the middle of the tropical island. He then proceeds to order Psycho to "can it" after he questions their true motives for being on the island and argues that Prophet knows more than he's telling him. After Prophet and Psycho's argument, they hear a thunderous roar in the distance; suddenly, an Ceph Scout blasts from the other side of the boat, abducting Jester and dragging him off into the jungle. They finally manage to find him but it is too late as he was nothing more than a mangled corpse on the side of the mysterious mountain. Prophet proceeds to vaporize his suit and continues forward with the mission.

Later he regroups with Nomad, who also begins to question his superiors motives. This startles Prophet as he is used to Nomad taking orders without question and being utterly obedient. He then tells him that he has no idea whats going on and that he was sent to find these people and that's what he is going to do. Immediately after his debacle with Nomad, he is abducted by a Ceph scout and dragged off into the jungle in the same manner as Jester. After his abduction, Nomad lists him as MIA rather than KIA hoping Prophet may still be alive; Major Strickland assumes mission command after this event.

Prophet miraculously reappears at the point of the story where Nomad exits the Ceph ship and saves him from a squad of Ceph troopers, but exhibiting strange behavior. He has somehow managed to jury-rig a complex alien weapon into operation while in the field, and seems to have a much deeper understanding of the Ceph than anyone else, but his suit's thermal systems are badly damaged. Nomad then escorts Prophet out of the sphere and escorts him to a VTOL to safety. Once he returned to the USS Constitution, he is seen arguing with Psycho (who also managed to survive) telling him how he's going to take the fight to the Ceph. Prophet was last seen stealing a VTOL and flying back to the island with the intent of stopping the Ceph forces singlehandedly. Presumed dead after the island is the subject of a nuclear strike, he was last revealed to be alive when Psycho received a radio communication from Prophet on a VTOL with Nomad and Helena Rosenthal after the defeat of the Warrior at the hands of Nomad, whom quickly reacts to this by ordering Psycho to take them back to the island in search of him as thousands of machines pour out of the alien ship.

::Crysis 2::
At some point after the Lingshan incident, Prophet was promoted to the rank of Commander. It was then revealed that Prophet was under the orders of CryNet Systems CEO Jacob Hargreave, who had him investigate Lingshan to procure acknowledge about the aliens, the Ceph. Prophet confronted Hargreave about his knowledge about the Ceph and was angered to learn that his superior actually used him and Raptor Team as mere test subjects to field test the Nanosuits against the Ceph; Hargreave calls Raptor Team's casualties "a necessary sacrifice." As a result, Prophet went rogue and stole the Nanosuit 2.0, becoming a wanted man in the process. In the years between 2020 and 2023, Prophet somehow discovered the existence of Ceph ships buried all over the Earth and traveled to New York City to warn the city of his findings. He arrives too late, however, as the invasion has already begun.
Prophet allied with Nathan Gould in finding a way to combat the Cephlaoids. At some point, Prophet was infected with the Ceph's "Manhattan" virus. On August 23rd, he rescued a dying Alcatraz after a Ceph Gunship destroyed his reinforcement submarine and killed most of the marines on-board. He gave Alcatraz his suit before committing suicide so that the Nanosuit would adapt to Alcatraz, leaving behind a video inside the suit for Alcatraz

Throughout Alcatraz's journey, he encounters many of Prophet's memories inside the suit, and the suit itself delivers messages from Prophet; these are possibly programs he instigated before his death.

After Alcatraz's heroics in halting the Ceph invasion of Manhattan, he encounters Prophet apparently inside the suit itself. Prophet hinted the suit had somehow 'preserved' his spirit. He explained things about the Ceph and says that neither he nor Alcatraz could die yet, and the nanosuit bearer awakened. After receiving a radio transmission from Karl Rasch, the other founder of the Hargreave-Rasch Biomedical corporation, Alcatraz reply to him, "They call me...Prophet," apparently in the latter's voice.

END TRANSMISSION

Alright, so, I was pretty hesitant about playing Crysis 3, because:

A) While I liked certain gameplay elements from 2, and it definitely felt smoother, it was extremely linear and I hated that I fought aliens for 90% of the game. They take a thousand hits to kill, whereas I prefer targeting skulls, they weren't particularly hard and I just had more fun in the beginning of the game hunting people.

and

B) I'm just a huge fan of Crysis 1 (with an AI/graphics mod addition), so being forced into a tiny box seemed to run counter to the theme 1 ran with, that being freedom. The first 3/4 of 1 allowed me to completely bypass enemies or stealth by them if I wanted, whereas the last part was closer to 2 in that I was engaging these idiots for no reason and I was basically on rails. Not cool.

I'm pretty much done with 3, and I've got to say its a huge improvement on 2. They really tried to advertise the bow as being a great new addition, but frankly, I barely used it unless I was only carrying heavy weapons. Still, it had its uses (letting CELL patrol into a nearby stream, and killing all of them with the electric arrow). That said, the weapons are pretty snazzy. You can customize the shit out of them via optics, muzzle attachments and ammo types, but I really only used the red dot sight, silencer and semi-auto attachment (btw, wtf? Why is that even a thing?).

AI is pretty standard Crysis 2. My first playthrough was on the second highest difficulty, and they were still easy and fairly incompetent. There'd be times where I'd hop into their patrol while stealthed, and snap their necks one by one while the guy behind him saw it. He'd just comment about how I was hunting them, and a few times they fired in my general direction hoping to hit something, but for the most part maximum stealth (especially with the suit mods, which I'll get to next) make you nigh invincible in environments where you can roleplay the predator.

Suit mods are a feature that we didn't really need, but certainly make the game easier, especially towards the end, which is either good or bad based on the player's perspective. I didn't like it, because I was already basically in god mode. That said, I definitely abused the heavy armor upgrade later on because I decided to rambo it up against the heavy enemies toward the end. There are 12 or 16 suit mods altogether, I forget which. But you have a lot to work with.

For the most part, you'll be fighting CELL in this game. I love it 3 simply because of that. But later on, there'll be a lot more fighting between the Ceph and CELL, where you can choose to either **** them all up, or just use one side as a distraction to get by the other. CELL tend to have a lot of automated turrets, which gives you a reason to use your visor besides painting enemies. You can now hack into turrents, door locks and certain Ceph enemies using your visor, and you'll play a quick mini game to complete the hack. If you fail, you'll lose all of your suit energy, and if you were stealthed, you'll obviously lose that, too. I did a lot of my hacking right next to enemies because why not, so I played carefully. One of the suit mods makes hacking easier by completing half the minigame for you.

Anyway, there's a shit ton more to the game. Ultimately, I think its better than 2, in terms of environments, enemies, and story, which I won't even touch on. Just know that 2 was ridiculous and 3 fixes a lot of that. If you played the first one, you'll see a few callbacks to that game in the form of characters and a certain scene that made me both angry and sad because I had no idea this event happened, let alone in a goddamn comic, but it made me a little more emotionally invested in what was going on.

Whatever, play the ******* game.

You're the best, Proz. 99% of it is a recap of who's who and what's what. The paragraph after the last pic begins my personal views on the game, which sound pretty negative, but when you consider how negative I am and the small number of things I actually have to ***** about, it's clearly a pretty good game.

I'll be trying it out, I still have to try the other two however.

Also nice OP, I wish people made more detailed OP's instead of just posting a link. It makes the usual threads no different from RSS feeds.

I touched on this a little bit, but Crysis 1 is pretty amazing up until they decide we've had enough Koreans for one game. A lot of people continued to like it, but I hadn't felt as betrayed since Far Cry, when I went from killing mercs to fighting mutant rabid apes.

I stopped playing Far Cry after the ape part. I lost interest.

And I agree, out playing the humans in the original crysis was so much better.

I just started playing Crysis 3, although I am just playing on automatic. Don't really have much motivation to play for the story.

I couldn't give less of a shit about the Ceph if I tried, but once
Psycho showed up literally 2 seconds into the game
I began to pay attention, because I hadn't realized
******* Nomad died.
. I was hoping he'd show up, too, and we'd rock and roll together. But nope. Other than that, though, its better than the bullshit they pulled in 2 about a bio weapon.

I hate that they make you love a character (Nomad) and then just switch to a completely new one out of the blue a la Crysis 2.

Honestly its like
nothing we did in Crysis 1 mattered at all.

I thought that, too, until I found out why they did it.

Nomad died after sacrificing himself to save Psycho and Prophet from the Ceph sometime after Crysis: Warhead.

Don't read this if you don't want to know what became of Nomad:

http://crysis.wikia.com/wiki/Jake_"Nomad"_Dunn

Later on in Crysis 3,

Psycho gives you 3 sets of dog tags, one of which belongs to Nomad. After you receive them, Prophet attaches them to his bow and you see them dangling every time you use it. It was kind of an emotional scene between Psycho and Prophet.

It all makes sense, basically.

I played Crysis 1 back in the day and it was an awesome game. Although I never finished it since I got lost in that damn space ship.

But Crysis 3 looks amazing from the videos I've seen (mostly multiplayer) and I can't wait to get a new computer so I can play it.

I just beat Crysis 3, and I have to say I'm impressed. Between the graphics, ability to actually play using stealth, and its literary themes, it's won me over completely. Sorry, Cry1. You were dear to my heart, but you've just been outdone.
