cant get console to work i did the (C :\Sierra\Half-Life\hl.exe -game esf -console) thing but still wont work. i also freed up the ~ button. any ideas whats wrong

Are you adding that into the esf shortcut properties?
Also if you unbinded "~", bind it back to colsole (or whatever key you want). If you have nothing binded to bring the colsole down, it wont work.
So add -console to your ESF shortcut properties and add this to the config.cfg file in your esf directory.
bind "YOUR_KEY_HERE" "toggleconsole"
