This just hit me out of no where. What if there was a cvar/setting when you create the game to change the melee?
As in cvar_advancemelee 1 changes it to regular old 1.2.3 styled melee, and cvar_advancemelee 0 changes it to esf 1.1 type of melee? To the extent where the game play would be as fast paced.
Is it possible?
