I bought it a few days ago and played it for a while. Here's my two cents:
Graphics: 7.8/10
The graphics are quite a bit better. The auras actually look like auras now. Rather than just a boring glow, now energy flows around you as you gain ki. The stronger you are, the bigger your aura looks, the beams look a little more detailed as well. The characters all look pretty much the same, there might have been a small change, but I didn't really notice that. The cinematics are a little bit different, but all genereally the same. I've never liked cinematics in fighting games, becuase they take away the primary necessity, speed, but that's for another catergory. This game has always been pretty impressive in the graphics category so, this isn't all that great of a change.
Gameplay: 4.8/10
There are a few new features that make this game different from the previous games.
The teleport feature is one of them. If an enemy attacks you, you canteleport behind them and retaliate, your enemy can actaully retaliate against your own teleport as well. It takes quite a bit of ki though, so teleport battles don't last long. I thought this feature was neat, but in my opinion it's way too easy to do. You can pretty much do it at any moment if you have enough ki, even in the middle of your enemy's combo. You can also teleport behind your enemy after you knock them back and attempt another hit, this is called "pursue". works the same way as the teleport, just that your press the energy button right after you hit your oppoent. This can be countered with a teleport. It does speed the game up a little bit, but becuase of how easy it is to pull of, it really isn't all that impressive. 5/10
Another feature is the dodge. Like the teleport, it's a way to evade your opponent's attacks. This feature is a lot better than the teleport in my opinion. If you block right when your opponent attacks your character does a cool little dodge with a blur effect. Aside from looking cool, it really is pretty neat and useful. Gives it a DBZ feel, and makes the fights a bit more interesting. 8/10
YAY, finally powerstruggling makes it into one of the budokai games. Very basic, two people throw a beam at the same time a struggle occurs. You both wiggle your sticks and whoever does it faster wins. They visually look amazing, the colors of the beams actually seem to mix together. Nothing special, but the game really needed this. Unfortunatley there is no block struggling. 6/10
The Dragonrush is new to the game, it works the same way as the pursue, but you need to be in hyper mode. This is one of those cinematic type moves, however you can chain it multiple times. It looks cool, but after a few times it gets really annoying. Not only are all of the cinematics exactly the same (with exception to the final scene that can change once you get your ultimate attack). I don't really like this feature at all, it takes far too long, it stops the pace of the game, and doesn't really make the player earn it. You just press a button, and if your opponent gets it right, he defends, if he gets it wrong you attack again. 2/10
The ultimate attack isn't new but it's handled a bit differently now. If you pull it off on your opponent, a little bar appears on the bottom of your side of the screen during the cinematic. It quickly fills up repeatedly and you have to press a button when it reaches max. You have to stop it 3 times, and each time you do depending on how well you stop it, it fills up another bar. whoever has the largest bar wins, if the defender winsm he still takes damage, just not as much. This also stops the pace of the game, but it is graphically satisfying. Overall the feature is pretty lame, just like it was before. 3/10
Other than these features the fighting system is the same, which is a pretty big change, but still not enough to make it all that great. Theres still only one blocking zone, you can't jump, you can't fly on command. Movement is sluggish, which makes the interactive enviroments pretty useless, seeing as you don't really end up moving all that much. Sidestepping is pretty much the same it was in B2, if you hold block and tap up or down twice, you sidestep up or down once. I prefer the SC style of sidestepping, where you can actually keep a steady sidestep going and then make a smooth transition to the opposite direction. As stated above I score it a 4.8/10.
Single Player: 4.4/10
Eh, better than both the first and the second but still pretty lame. It's like the dragon world in the last game but they try to make it look better by allowing you to fly around a small map that has little checkpoints you can land on. You can find capsules, zeny, enemies, or just see an unnecessary little dialogue between two or more characters. Itâs much easier to find dragon balls now, so for those of you who hated that aspect of the other games, there you go. There really isn't much you can do, but it is better than moving a little character on a fricken game board *shivers*. Itâs better than B1 as well, because the dialogue is a lot more like the actual animeâs, I actually think some of the lines were taken word for word. Unlike B1âs dialogue which was just wacky. It would be cool to have a graphic re-enactment like in B1, they butchered the hell out of it(for those of you who think that the English version of DBZ is kiddy, go play B1 and youâll know that it could have been much, MUCH worse.) So, there is no cinematic for the story (ironically there is no cinematic in the only place it could belong in a fighting game), itâs like the old DBZ RPG games, pictures + dialogue. Lame overall, but the end credits have some cool cinematics to watch.
Characters: 3/10
Heh⦠Pretty much the same story, each character has a small amount of special moves, and a few different combos, although each combo is pretty much just a variation of 2 or 3 base combos. It doesnât really matter if you hit above or below, because holding block will take care of it all, except for those pesky, ridiculously obvious block breaker moves. In street fighter, each character has only 2 or 3 moves, plus 2 or 3 special moves, but you can combine everything and make countless custom combos. You donât get that kind of freedom in budokai; youâre limited to what the game defines as a combo. Plus, in street fighter each character has his own style of fighting. Ryu is defensive and consistent with his damage, Ken is aggressive and relies on multiple hits to do his damage, Guile is anti-air/defensive⦠etc. In budokai, you play pretty much the same way with every character.
The game is better than before but it still needs major work to be a good fighting game. I donât regret buying it, because I do get some fun out of it, but I definitely say thatâs itâs worth 15 dollars.
Overall Rating: 5/10
Mediocre at best.
