I know, it tends to look like that - the actual beam seems to end just in front of the character, rather than literally pushing against them. But from a distance, it usually doesn't look too bad, except for when the beams bend and go all crazy.
I'm not sure how much of a viable issue this is though, because most people don't notice it (as seen by the other replies), and even when you do, it's not really that much of a problem.
