I have a soundmax digital audio, with windows xp installed with 2 ghz, 512 ram, 9800 xt 256, and it’s a sony viao. my problem is when i first start my pc my sound works and my microphone works. But not to long after start my settings get changed by something, my audio and voice settings say Modem #0 line instead of soundmax. And it says everything is working fine but i cant change the volume settings or pretty much anything in control panel/sounds and audio devices. could this be a virus? Or something else? If anyone has any ideas please reply thank you.

Hmmm I have the same soundcard, I dont think its a problem with it though...try updating to the latest drivers.

If that doesnt work then it might be wise to adjust sound in Half-Life.

this really isn’t a problem with halflife, well it is but mostly something is wrong with my soundcard because like i said something is changing the settings to where it wont play wav or let me use mic. Like when i try to use mic it says its being used by another program which is BS because its not. So yeah im pretty much screwed unless i reformat my pc but im not going to do that unless i have to.

Well you could try messing around a bit in Sound Properties, trying to see if you cant fix it.

IF no program is running the mic (but it still says it is), then try resetting.

Ok this is really weird i restarted my pc, then i ran a voice record program and got the mic working and my volume settings were ok. But after awhile i watched as the settings became non-changeable and my mic stoped working so something is changeing the setings. This is so messed up one min its fine then it messes up i cant figure this out.

Unplug your mic and put it back in, there also might be a program somewhere that can let you adjust the volume settings and also mic settings.

Try download.com and see if you cant find anything to help you.

No everything is fine but the settings in control panel (sounds and audio devices) it says on both playback and record settings "default device soundmax". That’s when i first start my pc then like 10 min later it changes to "default device Modem #0 Line" so yeah i dont know whats doing this. I have a program called Voicemask pro and when i try to run my microphone it says "Start Test Error. please stop other recording application. Application: ProcessID: 0", and i have Goldwave which says "Error Cannot start recording. Make sure correct recording device/quality is selected, no other programs are recording, and the sound card supports the file's sampling rate". Of course if have done this and no other program that i know of is using my microphone. So in conclusion something is seriously wrong here i think it may be a virus but i dont know. thank you Goku ssj uk for posting.

try scanning for a virus
otherwise uninstall the drivers and install the latest ones
