I am tempted to do that.

But even I think it's not quite sane...

Are you guys serious right now? How is it not sane? You're buying a game to play it. You're making use of the game you bought with your money, despite the fact that it's to play a third person mod.

Arma II is a game known for a few good things and a few bad ones.
Let's just focus on the bad ones for now: It is extremely glitchy a problem that hasn't been pretty much fixed not even today. It's also extremely demanding on the system so that's something to consider. It also requires a loooooooaaaaaaaad of patience from you.

Now he said he wanted to buy Arma CO for DayZ so let's take a look on the bad side of this particular mod: It's also glitchy, it has a habit to lag, a lot, it's filled with all sort of bugs. It's also extremely hardcore, which can be a huge turn-off for people. In the most recent patch you start weaponless, foodless and water/sodaless, which basically means that if you are new you are going to die, a lot or you'll consider starting a sprinting career because that's what you will do a lot, because the zombies detection system is still a little unpredictable. Another thing to consider: Watching a gameplay of DayZ can be really different from actually playing the game yourself. You may see someones Let's play like Sidestrafe or Jefmajor and say to yourself:"OMG I want to do that too!" but then you might end up disappointed. It's also "Walking+Scavanging Alone", the game, so consider if you have somebody to play this with or not, because unless you are into it it's not going to be interesting at all to keep playing

So the risks are pretty high, so high that you might kick yourself if you waste 30$ or how much it is on your steam on the game. Thank god it's at least not a full-price title. My advice for him is do what I'm actually considering doing more so than anything, wait for the game to go on a deal or something. But hey it's your 30$ and you know your PC and net connection better then I, so take those things into consideration.

Starting players with nothing was done because people were upset about players getting high end gear, then just camping all along the beach to kill fresh spawns for their food/drinks cause then they didn't have to do any real work. Now new players starting with nothing aren't worth the bullet. So to be fair, it was worse before.

Depends how you look at "worse". It's true that the camping or bean wars rate may have decreased but in exchange the deaths by zombies have increased. There is also a terrible annoyance that keeps occurring to most players and that is finding a building with stuff in it, that also has a bunch of zombies in it too, which means that if you have no weapon you can't go in there and get out alive.

In other words: New solution, new annoyances.

It returns some of the PvE that the game was missing since the removal of the bandit skin.. Something that needs to make a desperate comeback in some form. :\
