Very interesting technology, I wonder if rapid heating and cooling will contribute to shorter disk life though. Still, with Maxtor in their stable now, they have access to the most rugged platters available. We shall see what comes of this.

The article said it will cost relatively the same price as a regular hard drive on the market today. That doesn't mean that they're going to price them at that range though. I mean, if your hard drive can do a full 299 terabites more than the competition, wouldn't you price it a bit higher?

OMG, that's alot! I wouldn't even use .5% of that.....that would last me my whole life, unless it breaks down which will most probably happen, but sheesh.

Tbh, I find that kinda pointless, unless you have a super computer that is, but it's still amazing.

I hope something comes of this, with HD becoming bigger and more popular the extra size will be a necessity for backing up HD-DVD/Blu-Ray and recording HDTV broadcasts.

Maxtor is gone, the only thing exceptional about Maxtor drives, is that the platters were nigh unto indestructable. I wish the same thing could be said for their IDE and heads. Seagate is a very good HDD though.

is a terabyte 100gigs or 1000?

yeah i read a little on that page, if this went mainstream we'll be able to fit a hell of alot more information on computers. once they get that all standardized imagine all the new ipod bull**** they will be able to do.

new 4 terabyte ipod nano squared!

you can fit 4,000,000,000 songs on it!

Yeesh, I'd be happy with 1 TB. For 300, I would just download and install as much stuff as possible to keep it from getting lazy.

I don't even know what I'd use something like that for o_O I've got a 500 Gig external and wow, I haven't even filled more than 150 Gigs yet. Lord knows what I'd so with 300 TB. That'd be a lot of Anime and Sci-Fi I guess :p

1000 if you're a HDD maker, 1024 if you're not insane.

These HDD makers increase the amount you can hold but not how fast you can read/write to it. Sure, you'll be able to read/write a little quicker because of how much data is packed under the heads, but seek time will still be **** slow.

Well 750Gb HDD drives are the barrier at the moment, 2 of them will give you one and a half Terabytes.

But you remember when the 20gb was first released? Everyone was saying "omg I will never use that much space!"

Now its hard enough, (For me) Putting up with 200 or so Gb of drive space.
Will this drive have built in flash memory to boosts performance at all?

Well, I dunno. There are only three things that can eat that much space: copies of dvds (which, technically, you aren't supposed to make anyhow), movie editing files (which would require tons of high res clips), and of course, games (which are getting ridiculous nowadays...Act of War + One expansion pack = almost 8 gigs!)

Personally I'm finding my 300 gigs of combined space to be way more than enough. But the possibilities for personal computing's future, subsequent to this breakthrough, are very intriguing.

It's not really fair to compare the jump from 10GBs to 20GBs to the jump from (let's say on average) 120GBs to 300TBs =p. No one would have the need for this much space for a long time. I doubt we'll be seeing 300TB hdds from this technology for a long while, though, even if they're able to produce it; well, at least on the consumer side.

I doubt it'd be effective or efficient for a drive this large. If you're going to be storing that much information, and using a lot of it on a regular basis, extra cache will be pointless.
