I must be a sucker for these bastards anyway, I shall try my best to explain what the virus is and what it's currently doing to my computer

I've been trying to fix it for at least 2 hours and I'm stuck, it's some kind of trojan or virus that affects the file svchost.exe, i don't know how but I think it's being used as a backdoor to access my computer and slow it down

As when I look in the task manager it takes up 100% of the CPU usage and be using about 100 - 50 MB's worth of memory which slows the computer down to snail like levels as soon as I log on to the computer

I've tried googleing it and all I seem to get are really unhelpful tips, purely because these certain forms of virus seem to pop up in many different ways, meaning while I have exactly the same problem as these other people, their causes are different so I'll list what I've already checked it's not already

1 svchost.exe is the proper file name and it isn't anything else
2 the file is in the proper folder it should be, I've searched for it on the entire computer and I've found nothing else outside of that file
3 stopping it from task manager just makes the internet cut out and the display turning into win 98 type colours

any help would be awesome on this matter, as I've tried everything and I have exams next week so i need the internet to revise plus I'm trying wow for the 10 day free trail and I want to get my times worth to see if I pay for it :p

I've been hading it as well, It's not a virus or any kind for me.

svchost.exe is a system process belonging to the Microsoft Windows Operating System which handles processes executed from DLLs. This program is important for the stable and secure running of your computer and should not be terminated.
Even though, when it does increases my CPU usage to 100%, I simply shut it down without any kind of problems. I've asked my brother about it, and he told me some application is causing the problem.

could you ask your brother how so? As I'm sure it can't be right that a program is suddenly taking up twice the amount of memory it needs

And how can I fix it? because it's driving me mad !!!!!!

download ad-aware update and run full scan when its finished scanning it'll show a scan summery right click in the summery box and click select all objects, click next then ok.

http://www.download.com/Ad-Aware-SE...045910.html?part=dl-ad-aware&subj=dl&tag=top5

also get spybot update and run that. after you fix the problems with that make sure you immunize.

lets try the for know and see how it goes.

also make sure your virus scanner is updated.

I've done all of that and now svchost.exe is down to only 30 mb worth of memory which is still above normal (it's only supposed to be about 12 I think) but it'll do until my dad can reformat

thanks for the advice + links!

Glad to help :)

If you havent already you should scan your system with those programs again (I know its boring and frustrating) and see if anything still shows up. Try booting into safemode this time. And scan from there.

Also try using Ewido, Back in the days when I was using Windows XP Service pack 1, I had a virus that infected my scvhost.exe, And Ewido managed to remove it, and fix it, Also ditch norton and grab a copy of kaspersky, Norton is no where near as good as what it used to be, Especially compared to the DOS/Windows 95 days. And PCCillin seems to be just as bad now as well, Both programs are full of bloat.
Basically, if you want to make it hard to catch viruses and crud in the future, These are my recommended programs:
1) Kaspersky or AVG.
2) Adaware
3) Ewido
4) Mozzilla firefox
5) Spybot
**
With Firefox grab the ad block plus extension, for it.
And keep windows updated!

Or you could be like me and ditch the virus scanner, and just launch Trend Micro's Internet scanner every night, and let it scan the system while your asleep.

Stop going to porn sites, and stop trying to download illegal "warez". Your problem will be solved after that.

I would remove norton in an instant but my dad insists that I keep it on or else he'll just reinstall it and ban me from the computer because he thinks that just because it costs 50 quid that it's worth that much :p

@Pemalite: I use most of thoe programs on my laptop and I've never had a single problem with it, it's just because on this computer I'm limited by what I can and cannot do or else my dad will get a bit annoyed, I'm just lucky that he still thinks that Firefox is infact just an updated IE !

You could tell your dad about that norton takes up a lot of resources. Norton is not worth paying for in my opinion, I rather use other anti-virus programs which works just as fine as norton, but doesn't eat a lot of my cpu / resources.

I did, I even showed him each resource that Norton uses and how much of our memory it takes up, I made him sit down and explain it back to me afterwards and his reply was "but it works though doesn't it?"

It's just one of those things I shall have to live with,

You could always deactivate Norton when you are using the pc.. That way, you are not removing it, and not using it :).

Too mean, I don't think I trust you anymore......

anyway my problem is solved for now and seems to be ok, so I shall return to my revision of Wow (I'm currently using the excuse of I'm doing experiments on the players to see what their social activities are for sociology (social science))

I'm a genius :p

when you get infected with viruses and norton isnt getting rid of them, it's not working.

you might wanna go over this and maybe show it to your dad then decide what to do. http://anti-virus-software-review.toptenreviews.com/
