All it needed was SONIC! w00t!! Go Sonic!!

Anyway, I think a classic is just a really great game all together. It is a intricate mix of graphics, gameplay, and sound. Take Sonic and FF for example.

That was entirely pointless...

Anyway, it's considered a classic for one simple reason..
It was the first game of its kind.

Yeah, things LIKE it had been attempted before..
But this was the first full 3D game of its kind.
It was also a jump from 2D to full 3D..a dangerous and risky move.
Nintendo pulled it off..they made a great game out of a series that had been 2D since its conception.
Its considered a classic because, at the time, it was fresh and new. It had never been seen or really done before.
Plus..it was Mario.

I will agree with Chimp, it was named a classic because of the originality. Other than that, I loved it, I still play it from time to time. The full range of motion was amazing, made some levels seem endless (when I first started playing it.). What really impressed me was flight using the Wing Cap. It added so much more fun, being able to scope the level out from the skies. And when that got boring, there was always Shell Shredding, which was fun for jumping pits and squashing enemies.

In retrospect, it was an amazing game!

Cheers,

Well, what we meant is that the environment is 3d, not just the character models, henceforth it was the first, truly 3D mario game, which is the reason, IMO, it was made a classic.

Yes, that game had the appearance of 3D..
but..this was pulled off by making 3D models of the characters, and using them to make sprites..the same technique used for the Diablo series.

Mario 64 was the first full-3D game of its kind..
It was the first game that allowed full motion, full movement through an environment.

When it hit the shelves, it was the first time anybody had really seen anything like it.
It was a fully 3D world that you could explore..and it was Mario, too!

Yeah, Mario RPG IS a good game..
but..it's nothing revolutionary.
Mario 64 WAS..

It was a Classic! Thanks guys...

Thanks for all the reply's i got from you all, im interested to hear your reply's etc, i also agree with Chimpy. But i think it was a classic because of the Funability, the Colour the excitement, the fact that it was the first full 3D Mario game on a console I had! The fact the everything was interesting and just fun and lively, I havent come across ONE game that is a Mario Beater, thus it is why iam giving this..........................

Thank You

a classic game would be a mario and sonic co-operative where you needed both mario's (fireball and high jumping ) and sonic's (speed) abilities to succeed in missions.

That would be cool, but would make absolutely no sense what so ever.

The original sonic was classic, the new ones were kinda bland. Thing is with sequels, you have to think of new ways to make things fun. The original had an interesting blend of speed and gameplay. Usually sequels need to innovate to become better.
