Hmmm.
Well im posting this thread on the subject of what would happen to a person exposed to the vacuum of space. I got in an argument with hibiki on mirc, he believed that u could survive there for 5minutes before dying of asphixiation.
I however believed that due to the complete lack of pressure ur body would explode, because as it is a submarine which goes 1km deep in water will shrink to less than half its original size. Thats thick metal. Ours is skin and very badly insulated. Not to mention the temperature of space which is -273 degrees centigree. which is colder than liquid nitrogen.
I believed that when exposed to the vacuum of space u would die almost instantly. u would snap freeze and then ur molecules would disipate.
Upon research i found that the topic was extremely confused.
THe most official documentation said that you would pass out in 9 seconds and die within 50 due to the temperature lack of oxygen and pressure.
It also noted u would swell to twice ur original size before finally exploding and disipating, but it also said that ur tears would freeze. But i read another page that said that temperature in an absoloute vacuum is meaningless and in space liquid boils. Another said water would not boil nor would it freeze.
But I trust the official one from nasa. U would pass out withing 9 secs die within 50. Hibiki im writing this to declare a truce on mirc.
And also if anyone knows what might happen in there could u please inform me.

Well, the people that said water boils in space are just dumb. Water boils at 212 degrees F. It ain't that hot in space. It would however freeze. and you could survive for a few secs. but u won't instantly die.

yeah i know, but the boiling point drops the lower the pressure. It only takes like 40degree centigree to boil water on some mountains.
IN a vacuum the pressure would be so unbelievably low that the boiling point would be like -273degree centigree apparantly.
But that seems stupid. It seems much more likely that u would freeze if u breathed in or opened ur eyes or left ur ears unblocked. (which is what nasa said)
apparantly nasa tested this on a monkey and a dog...which both exploded within 50 secs...
nasa eh, when will they learn?

it couldn't boil at -273 because thats absolute zero and for those that arent doing A-level chemistry or above, Absolute zero is the theorectically lowest temperature that you can reach, at this point no more energy can be removed from a substance so it cant get any colder. It also has never be attained before, the lowest temperature to this is something a few degrees off this.

I hope this is all correct cause im gunna look silly if any of this is wrong.

no you blow up like a balloon first
cause in space there is no pressure from the air
so you become bigger but you dont have oxigen so you pass out before you explode
so nsa is prob right

As I understood it from my Physics studies:

You begin to rapidly depressurize, which ruptures your veins and capilaries in the skin and eyes. Water does boil at rediculously low tempurature when it has no pressure acting on it. Your blood would simultaneously freeze and boil. Depending on how close you were to a star, the star side of your body might be cooked by temperatures in excess of 200 degrees, the earths Van Allen belt deflects alot of nasty stuff. Gamma rays would irridate your body and destroy your DNA in a matter of minutes of exposure, if you were really close. This causes your internal organs to die, and cells stop deviding. In addition, the microwave radiation from the star would cook you inside out (also really close, as in inside Venuses orbit). On the freeze side, your cellular membranes rupture from the freezing/boiling. Then you explode . . . not a pretty way to die. All told it would take less than a minute for you to die horribly.

yea many intelligent people on the forums but cucumba always owns us;/
but yea your lungs would collapse, and up in space a shadow can be a 500 degree difference, you would instantly die (someitmes)

well, accually the truth is that if you hyperventilate and exhale you can last a good 30 seconds in space.

Hearing Cucumba's mini-univeristy-lecture-ish deely brought me back to my grade 8/9 study on space. When u think about it, for such reasons above, for example, space can be much more of a hazard than people may think, it can't be taken lightly. Not only will there be hazardous radiation, but the fact that it is a vacuum will have odd pressure effects on you...can't remember if its implosion or explosion, more likely the first.

It really makes you appreciate the turmoil that people in aeronautical areas endure: pilots, people at control, and even the engineers (when your designs become flawed and become a hazard, it really hurts). The risks they take are greatly appreciated, that they put their lives forward to bring us to a greater knowledge of the universe.... when you look at the possibilities.:scared: it is shocking.

if we didnt have an atmosphere then we would burn up, i think. and yeah you would onhly last about a minute and that minute would be excruciatingly painful cause youd be bursting at the seams

I have an Idea, A mass experiment.

We take everybody who has participated in this thread(Save for me) and put them in the vaccum of space to find out.
