Rugby season in our school starts in march, but i'd like to get a head start and start training/working out/etc now, just to be ready, as it'll better my chances of making the team (I gotta compete with people in grade 11 and 12, and i'm only in 10).

So any recommendations to help me train, etc?

P.S. Gonadz| is the rule, and should be unbanned.

yes, lift tons of weights, and RUN RUN RUN. i was a packy (8-man) and my coach told me to run with the backs during the off season! i suggest squats, not like a football player,(low rep/high weight) but lift with a decent amount of weight with a decent amount of reps. u will be glad to have every bit of energy when the playin starts. trust me. (I LOVE RUGBY) then do a lot of bench, i would say increase the weights/decrease the reps for this because ur upper body needs to be an inpregnable fortress if u ever get the ball. do curls, french curls, or skull crushers if u cant do french curls. also do fore-arm curls with ur rists. ull need to build power in ur wrist and shoulders for tackles while on the run. other than that, just practice really hard when it starts. nothing gets u in shape for the game like playing it.

Wake up every morning and do 50 push ups and 50 sit ups (every human being should).

Also, don't be afraid to ask your coach what you want to know. When it comes to learning a specific talent, there is no such thing as a dumb question. The fact you take the time to listen to him, adhere to his advice, and prove that you really want to be there, will not only develop his trust in his you, but his willingness into letting you learn at your own rate.

Don't just kiss his ass, but let him know that you do believe in what you can do on the field and that your out there to win. I know I'm giving you basically a boost of self-esteem. I have played sports, and I guess it's in my nature.

Confidence man, just go out there and be confident... don't let a damn thing break you down.

yeah, i also recommend hitting ur thigh muscles after u work out with ur fist. i know first hand, if u have soft quadricepts and some little guy wants to bring u down by putting his shoulders into ur legs, its going to be REALLY painful for a few days.

find a nice large hill and run up and down it alot for speed training..

lifting weights is key

Ya, my coach said doing some endurance weight lifting and stuff so I can handle alot of hits for long periods and such.

Thanks for the tips so far, anymore?

it also depends what position you want to play, i was a prop, so having massive upper body and leg strength was paramount... learning to pass properly is essential, both over short and long distances. having good awareness, and being able to listen to someone screaming at you from the sideline is always a good thing... like terror said, hitting your legs is good...i rarely get dead legs now... but i thank the time i took to do it intentionally sometimes, theres some big guys in rugby teams, and it hurts when they hit you. one of the exercises we had (as the foreward team) was to push the scrum machine all the way to the other side of the field, that hurt...especially when the coach added people to its weight, we also ran with the backs in our practice, which i can say really benefited us, having both fast forwards AND backs...

dont build ur stomach muscles up too much make sure u eat loads :D , consequences: stomach impact with built up muscles = broken ribs , trust me happened to me .

i guess when training for rugby its more of an endurence sport than football would be.. i train high weight low reps, you should do low weight high reps i guess

As you can see my workout plan is sort of hard. I'm starting it on monday, and I need some quick tips to boost it up.

I plan to boost it up after 4 weeks or so. Like start running with weights, and slowly increasing the weight amount, and I plan to do more reps in the sit up/burpees/etc category like instead of doing 15, I'd boost it up to 20, then do 15 on my next set, then 10 on my final set.

Also, got any tips to get energy (remember I need to get up at 7 almost all the time for school)?

get lots of sleep, forget about late night tv shows. during the season, i never stayed up past nine on week days. also, running with weights is not a great idea for rugby. just push ur self really hard all the time when running without weights because the weights will do sneaky things to ur muscles. u wont get faster or more endured, in fact, the minute you run without weights, ur body will feel really light for a few minutes. in that amount of time, you will think you are flying, but really you will be going just slightly faster, and since u feel lighter u will forget to pace urself, and u will wear out. trust me, ive seen it/experienced it a million times. if you want to run with weights, do the 40 meter dash with a weight bag on a cord tied to a harness on ur waiste. that is the only type of weight running pro rugby guys ever do. because that wont make u feel lighter, but it will make ur hamstrings longer and thicker, which will make you ALOT faster. other than that, sounds like a solid plan. stick with it. also remember in rugby, brute force is not as important because you only need it for a few seconds during the scrum. during the winter, i lift for rugby(not counting curls and the other auxilaries i do) for about a half hour. thats a half hour i spend on squats and bench and maybe a few more specific lifts. i spend about an hour jogging. if you can run 7 miles in an hour, you will be fine. in fact you will have no problem getting around the field with that amount of endurance. i know its not blinding speed, but when you are 200lbs and can do that, trust me, you will be fine. because i weight 195 and thats the pace i run, and im almost never out of breathe unless i get the ball in the open and take off, then after i score the try/get tackled/get beheaded by mob of angry backs i will be gasping, but other than that, as far as playing goes you will be solid for two periods. if anybody who actually PLAYS rugby sees a flaw in my advice, lets hear it, and whats wrong about it.

Remember to have ALOT of sex after each days hard training . It's great for your hips if you work alot .
