question about putting it on a USB

Ive been trying to put my steam HL and ESF on a usb to run on schools computers but everytime i launch it with steam off, it says "error in authenucation interface. Exiting." then it closes. I have no idea what this means and how to fix it. Any help please?

You need to put the entire STEAM directory on the USB. Then at school you need to run STEAM in offline mode in order to use the HL engine.

well. wait, would steam need to be installed into the program files?

No.

Steam can be anywhere, but hl.exe requires steam.exe in order to run. Just keep the directory structure in tact and it should work. Meaning that HL is in the commin foulder and so on. Where exactly it all is is irrelevant. I myself have steam installed in "d:\games\"

But you will need to start steam once in online mode and then switch it to offline from there, just for the account information update to the registry files of the computer you are using.
