Radeon.. yuck. I'm an nVidia fan, but I won't scold you, but do get the 98 pro, its much better performance wise than the XT, as it couldn't even defeat the 96 pro in most things. Otherwise everything looks good, AMD 43v3r!!!11
And if you had the choice, get Crucial ram.

The 9600XT beats the 9600Pro in every test. There is nothing in the 9600Pro that's better than the 9600XT.

Anyways, I say you should've waited for the R420 or NV40.

They did some prerelease benchmarks with the NV40 and scored like 12520 in 3dmark03 at stock speeds, 2000 faster than the most overclocked 9800XT in the world. That says a lot.

You did pretty good though, but the processor should have been 3200+ or more so it had 1024 L2 cache instead of 512, which is what you have right now.

And make sure the memory is PC3600 or more =o.

Smith, he said Radeon 9800 Pro, not 9600 Pro. And perhaps he had some sort of budget when he put this together?

But if you didn't, shame on you, get the 9800 XT! :p

Looks like I was hearing the wrong thing then. Although it beats it in all cases, it's definatly NOT a huge margin.

The Radeon 9600 XT is only marginally faster here than the 9600 Pro. However, it can finally outpace the "old" Radeon 9500 Pro in some cases.

As for the comment on buying the 98XT, go ahead, if you wanna pay 200 more dollars for minimal frame rate increases.

Didn't read that post.

The nVidia drivers used for the test results you saw were rigged (but they were the official drivers), specifically designed so that the cards didn't have to render half as much stuff, and it gained an average of 30% in FPS from these drivers. It's worth noting that what they did to boost their frames is either impossible or incredibly difficult to do in-game, because their optimizations dealt specifically with how the 3DMark03 demos ran on pre-designated courses and the camera wasn't movable. If it was, you would be able to see a lot of gemoetry missing.

Tassadar,
I didn't say it was a huge margin, I just said that it beats the 9600Pro in everything due to just higher clocks =o.

As for the 9800XT, pretty much a waste of money.
Go with the 9800Pro or wait for the new round of cards.

Also, Chrono, people have speculated that nvidia has taken out the majority of the 'cheats' in the drivers for their cards. Although I believe they still do cheat, you have to think of this: If the 5950Ultra scores about 7k with the drivers and the NV40 scores 12500 with the same drivers, it's a pretty good card. Unless they added some built in cheats o_o.

And I'm a little disapointed at ATi for including only pixel shader 2.0 and vertex shader 2.0 into their new card =(.

Get the 9600XT Extreme 128MB Ram because it has 50 more mhz on the memory I believe and faster ns memory OR get the 9800Pro 128MB Ram, 256 is completely useless and usually slower due to higher latency.

Also, the new cards with be:
ATi Radeon 9900 (R420)
Nvidia hasn't released a name for the NV40.

Also, Devion. When the 5800Ultra or the 9800Pro was released, the older generation cards were still just as expensive for many months =\.

Can you hear us?

The 256MB ram is too much and too useless. By the time games require 256MB ram, the GPU won't be able to handle that much texture swapping.
