Yep. Another map being made by me (this I believe is the 3rd one I've made within a two weeks time span). It's going to be a city map... enough said. Once again and I guess I should state this everytime I make a new map thread: I have an extremely bad habit of starting new maps even if I'm working on one. I apologize if this is becoming an annoying habit of mine, especially since I bother to make threads about maps that are not even 5% done.

Video (2.3 Mb): http://www.freewebs.com/danotoriousmc/buildings.wmv

The video is really short (ironically so is my map in terms of size). Ignore the music, I didn't feel like closing WinAmp just so I can record a 24 second video.

yea good map but i think you won't release it >_<
I apologize for my bad habit of not finishing or releasing any maps I work on. Technically I consider the maps I've shown so far as practice maps, but I do want to finish them and release them. Once again, I apologize for my bad habit.

Hmm...well, it'd be cool if the buildings were destructible. Obviously not in the same way as the city map in Tenkaichi (needs plenty more force than simply swooping through it like in Tenkaichi). I'm sure it can be done in a sane way. Fully destructibles with certain mini destructables on them are always nice, gives a palpable sense of mass.

Well anyway, who doesn't like a city map? I just say, lots of buildings, and LOTS of tall ones! Too much open space is a bore.

Destroyable buildings are possible, but it's a real pain to get it right so that it looks somewhat realistic.

Yeah, one of the recent posts where grega made a system, but I don't think it totally works out, he has a great mind.
Oh and MC, same with me, I hate doing it, but I just do, I probably have 3 unfinished maps, but I do finish mine after a week or so of leaving them, I'm still waiting for a model for my kaiplanet map.....

I'm downloading that video now, oh btw, why not release all those unsuccesful maps in a map pack when you finally finish them?

Good idea, depends how bid they are, or just resize them, then make it that you can teleport to the different levels or just combine them all at one area to make it like a small town or whatever. XD

I'm thinking about what I should do with them all, I just keeping coming up with different ideas which don't fit with the original map(s).

Small Update (3.1 Mb): http://www.freewebs.com/danotoriousmc/updateonmap.wmv

I added a tram like thing to give my map more of an urban feel to it and added more building detail (which I seem to be spending most of my time doing).

Just for Half-Life originally, then I moved to ESF for a very short while, then I took a long hiatus. Once Half-Life 2 was released I moved to mapping for the Source Engine (my sig is of an old map I was working on for Half-Life 2, but I no longer have that map). Now I'm mapping mostly for ESF right now, and sometimes I'll work on mapping for Half-Life 2.

Tha't s super cool, I love it, but did you use clipping and carving for all of that? You're very creative, keep up the good work, but don't do that too much, make sure to check the amount of faces in hammer at "show information", I reccomend not to make that go above 1600 faces.

That face count is too high, anything over 1000 isn't reccomended, especially given the current size of the map. That's why I asked you if you mapped for Half-Life, you can get away with more detail.

The thing is since my last update (which was yesterday) I added more detail to the buildings and to the tram thingy.

Well this doesn't look good, just when I thought I was making progress. The only reason I have so much detail has to do with all of the city maps I've seen and how all the buildings were blocky (ESF, The Specialists, etcetera).

Unfortunately there's no way I could reduce the detail without messing up the map (I tried to keep everything as clean as possible) but I guess there is always a way. I guess I'll just go back to working on making terrain and see if I can finally make any progress, either that or go back to my first map (I have yet to check the information on that map).

*Checks now*

Weird Combination Type Map:

Solids: 303
Faces: 1,867

Well that idea just got shot down... I guess I'm going to have to start making a new map...

Hey, maybe you can reduce the wpoly of that city map a bit, I think I saw that you carved out those windows, you don't need to do that, just edit the texture you used and put black blocks in the middle, so then it will look like windows, I hope you know what I mean.

That's also the reason why I never made a city map for esf, maybe you should keep that map, it looks super, but the problem is esf, because of the freedom of the game(ability to fly, etc.), you'll see more of the map, thus causing more wpoly exposure.

Well I talk too much, I'll continue what I was about to say but forgot in my next post. ;) (so that it looks less and more ppl will actually read it, making it more useful)
