Lets face it Phatslugga, an anime with swearing sounds more realistic. Look at the dubbed Cowboy Bebop and animes like it, it had a few swear words in, not like f*ck but stuff like sh*t, ******* etc. It seemed more realistic than, "holy moley" or "fool"

Heh, they usually don't replace the swear words like that (it happens, but not often) they usually just re-word it so a swear word isn't necessary. You're taking it to an extreme too, I've never heard anyone say holy moley, and what's wrong with fool?

-_- you're cheesy :p. I don't know maybe I'm cheesy but I always liked when they used the word fool, it made them sound more intelligent then calling them ****ing *******.

yeh, no anime says ******* in it, but the do say ******* from time to time in more adult anime like Cowboy Bebop and ermmm.....Trigun...i think...oh yeh...and in Shadow Skill

On Topic, Naruto wins :\ . The animation quality during the Cell Saga dropped a lot, and a lot of the drawings were out of proportion. But Naruto remains a good quality throughout

Something that will one day likely become as evil and frowned upon as DBZ is right now :p

I guess I'm going to have to vote for Naruto, just because I find it more interesting in terms of the way fights go, the complexity of the story (Ok, it's not NGE but it's still more complex than DBZ), and the characters/character development.

On the side note of swearing: If Vegeta, Prince of all Saiyans, ran around swearing like a street punk, I think that'd be totally moronic; some people think that swearing like a sailor somehow makes a show better or something... these people need to grow up. I agree when you said profanity can make a character more real in certain situations, but I've yet to see an anime when they use it to the extreme. I think "damnit" is a fine substitute for that S-word synonymous with poop or even the F-word. Do I prefer any of them? No, I don't care, but nothing is being detracted from the show.

They do use the B-word on adult swim (rhymes with mustard) fairly often in the dubbings, by the way. They actually started to let loose a little bit :p

on note of the jap dub, imo it is far superior in every way to the funi dub, phat, you posted your example.... let me post 1,

Funi: buu just absorbed vegetto, he's flying around, he's hungry so he goes to the nearest city, and eats sum cakes, then flies off and throws a few ki blasts at buildings

Jap: buu just absorbed vegetto, he's flying around, he see's a city, starts flying through it and throws cars threw buildings, flys threw the builing, uses eye beams blowing up parts of the city, and throws ki blasts, and overall just destroys the city

you see thats the kind of stuff which people think dbz is just a stupid cartoon for, because the real intentions of the creators are changed, and thus it looks stupid. The dailogue in the jap version is much less baby talk where i dont need to be told what goku's going to do 50 times before he actually does it. Those stupid flashbacks that the characters have sometimes when its totally unessecary, and waists 10 mins of the show are not in the jap versions. I dont know why people dont like the voices in the jap version, they all have real personality, unlike the all mono sylabical tone deaf funi actors. Swearing is another issue, i myself find it dissapointing that vegeta doesnt talk like in the jap version, the swearing is always at the appropriate times, it isnt like he wants to swear evry other word, you see swearing is realistic, i dont know about you but if you thought the world was gonna explode, and we were all gonna be killed, i wouldnt say "darn it is there nothing we can do?" i'd be cursing and shouting my head off.

You see if you saw naruto full or dumb phrases, baby talk, un-needed flashbacks, edits in the animation, and all other changes to the show which funi did to dbz, yoiu wouldnt want to watch it as much, as 10 mins of evry ep would be useless crap you dont give a **** about. Naruto is fortunate it hasnt been mutilated by a huge corperate company out there just to make money, and to change the perception of the show. I dont know about you but i almost always prefer original versions of anything, because i feel that the creators intentions are communicated in the best way possible, and it shows you evrything with the original purpose behind it, instead of changing things that makes some situations stupid, because you arent fully aware of why or how it is ment to happen, scince changes in script do this a lot, i dislike many things because they have been changed, just take a look at 2 different subbed versions of 1 naruto episode, some of the differences in the translation, totally change the meaning behind some of the things they say. Personally if i compare dbz jap to naruto, i perfer dbz, if you compare the funi dbz to naruto, naruto wins hands down, you have no idea how much i hate the funi version.... but when you dont get jap eps easily its a problem, cuz ive lost a lot of interest in dbz cuz i cant find any jap eps. but yeah thats my opinion.

lol david, your right about the prolonging in DBZ, they talk for about 20 mins then there's 5 secs of action where you see them flying at someone then the episode ends with a freeze frame or a cliffhang with the real annoying "Find out next time, on DragonBall Z"
Then there was the Buu part, i dont know what it was like in US, but in UK, OMG!!! It was so friggin camp!!! My older cousin came downstairs to see what DragonBall Z was like for the first time, and it had Buu in the bath with Hercule o_O and then something really queer happened which i forget. I was to busy caressing the bruise where he had just punched me after seeing what he saw :\

I think the characters are better in naruto, I just have more fun watching naruto than DBZ, thing is. people can come here and technically explain why an anime is better. but this poll is really about what people think and feel.. if you feel naruto is better, because you have more fun watching it, isnt that what this is all about?

I see no reason to discuss something with arguments when the question is really asking for an oppinion.

Well, these are what were are posting, our opinions. People get into arguments over their opinions, that's just how it happens, and there's nothing wrong with that. It always healthy to have a good argument, as long is it's not a pure flame war, which this isn't.

Dave, I know what you're saying, that example makes Buu look a bit more silly/childish, but it still doesn't change the fact that he's a merciless cold-blooded killer. It's still insignificant to me, if they were changing the main plot/storyline then I'd have a problem with it. I know that people look at it differently, but my main point is even the original script in my opinion, isn't as good as naruto. Sure Funi made it a little worse, but not by much. I've seen a number of episodes in the japanese version, and they just aren't as good. Naruto's story is a bit more complex, there are twists, where DBZ has just a straight forward ass-kick type storyline. In Naruto, there are themes to each part of the series that go along with the original plot. The first episode is devoted to Naruto trying to become acknowledged by someone other than himself. Later in the series, it focuses on three characters, Neji, Rock Lee, and Hinata. Hinata strives to become a different person, with the help of Naruto. Neji learns that his life isn't controlled by fate. Rock Lee is trying to prove that old fashioned hard work can overcome a genius. Currently the main focus is on Naruto and Gaara. Naruto grew up without knowing his parents and no one to care for him, he finally finds out that Iruka cares much for him and others begin to learn that he's much more than he was before. Garaa on the other hand grew up hated just like Naruto but never had the loving care that Naruto ended up getting, he grew up self-reliant, and still is. Who's stronger between the two? Sub-plot, themes, something that DBZ does poorly, DBZ is just too simple, become stronger than the enemy. One thing that DBZ does well is character development... but only for a few characters, like Vegeta, Goku... maybe Gohan. The rest of the characters are just not as well developed.

I'm watching the Japanese version of the Frieza saga, and I am blown away at how ****ing different it is.

I'd say Naruto = 9.5

Japanese DBZ = 9.0

Hmmm....let's see how this fares

Naruto = Ninjas

DBZ = No ninjas

So I'm with Hibiki on this one. Without ninjas it won't pwn.

J/K!

Actually, they both had a good plot going on.

Naruto has characters which are explained in-depth. One such person would be Kakashi. Now if anyone watched special episode 26 (yes that one) you'll notice that it goes over each and every character. It's sort of a bonus, but it's heck worth adding to the story. Speaking of Kakashi.....in fact, everyone in Naruto, they have some sort of mystery to them in the beginning. Every character has their own dreams and goals, and the story tells it in-depth.

DBZ on the other hand, started very well. But after the Frieza saga, it started to go downhill. Suddenly it became a I'm Stronger type of cartoon. I'm pretty sure this is noticeable by all so this won't need lots of explaining.

Next, storyline.SPOILERS AHEAD

------------------------
Naruto : Naruto has a dream to become Hokage, Sasuke wants to kill Itachi. Sakura wants to stay with Sasuke. Kakashi wants to read his 'Icha Icha Paradise' manga for who knows how long (and does BTW) Chouji wants to eat all day and Shikamaru wants to live a peaceful life. Notice all their stories are WAY different from each tohers. It sort of makes us confused and stuff. And trust me on this, but if it's the first time you've watched the Wave Country saga, then it gets very confusing (it was for me)
If you happen to notice, their stories intertwine with each other and break off every now and then. Up to episode 72, I have never seen all characters share them same objective for more than 5 episodes.

On the other hand, DBZ's characters all end up sharing the same goal within something like 10 episodes. Sure, Vegeta is the only one left out, but he's the only unique guy there. Goku, Gohan, Krillin, and everyone else share the same goal : Save earth. This is definitely noticeable again, after the Frieza saga. Before it, it was just like Naruto. Stories intertwining every now and then, blablabla.
-----------------------

Now on to overall style....

Naruto : Nicely done. Well made in-depth storyline and all.
DBZ : Was good too, until after the Frieza saga. After that it was always save the worl save the world. The only exception is Vegeta, who still wants to kill Goku.

Conclusion?

It is inconclusive. It is far too early to compare Naruto to DBZ. I say give it time to finish THEN we compare it.

Of course, if the storyline dropped down like DBZ did, then we know it's something with stuff getting more and more boring.
