I am in an urge to share the points of my problems with facebook:

*Encouraging attention whores - For me it feels facebook encourages attention whores, especially women, to post every little thing about them - what they just ate, where they go (Check-in if im not mistaken is the name), millions of photos on their albums, posing in pictures trying to look hot. that is what i think of at the moment, but you guys can say more. I don't think it is a human trait we should encourage. Everyone wants to be at the center of attention, but when it comes to encourage narcsissm?

*Encouraging the human urge to pick up information on other people's lives you are hardly in touch with - All the gossip queens and kings out there, facebook is the ultimate tool to pick up dirt, or obsessively lurk on their facebook page sucking all information possible. I don't think this is a character which should be encouraged. I think we should control ourselves, our desires, and not to be so obsessive with other people's lives. "So he went to a party, so ******* what, why do I care, he just works with me" - this is how I think. This is also relates to attention whores, they supply information, and this lurking facebook pages guys and girls give them the attention they desire.

*"You have 548 friends" - really? 548 friends? I didn't know one can hang out with so many people and have meaningful enough conversation and know them good enough to call them "friends". It just pisses me off how facebook undervalues the word "Friends".

*Hurts the deepness of the friendships - Tell me, how do you feel when your friend just writes on facebook "I just brushed my mouth", I know this online communication is free so you wouldn't call your friends telling them that, but not because of the cost, because it is useless and even silly. Do they think they are funny, are they bored? I don't want to see a 1 liner of what daily routine about what my friend just did, I want to speak to him about something meaningful, like how was his day, did he end the relationship with the girl who drove him mad? did he patch up his feud with his boss?
NOT that you just brushed your teeth!

I realize this behaviours are well inducted into us as humans, but why do we let facebook encourage shallow relationships?
The only good think I can think of is having the casual chat and update with a long lost friend from lets say, elementary school... but that is pretty much it.

When people ask me why they didn't find me on facebook and im telling them I just don't have any they look at me like im from outer space, but I feel perfectly fine with my decision. I see the world around me changing and become more alienated.

Share your opinions, im deeply interested.

A lot of jobs are actually putting it on applications to place a link to your Facebook profile if you have one from what I have seen. It's getting crazy.

Honestly, I just remove e-friends that do most of the things you described, Deco. As a result, my Facebook news feed only has stuff I'm interested in and some stuff that I don't mind seeing.

^This... in progress. :)
But yeah it's annoying to see people posting pretty much everything.

I certainly agree with the social negatives you mentioned that Facebook encourages.
But, I think that it's like with anything... violent video games and porn for example... violent people will still kill, and guys will still masturbate to naked women.
So, you can expect that self-centered people will always find a way to brag about themselves, despite the medium they use to do it.
Facebook also offers a lot of other really cool things though that often seem overshadowed by the stupid social stuff that goes on (like you mentioned)... Like:
- Social gaming
- Drawing apps (Graffiti)
- Support for businesses

Support for businesses is a huge one...
I've been posting my comics there in an effort to gain an audience, and its advertising platform is awesome.
I can't think of a cheaper way to get your business out to millions of people of exactly the demographic you're looking for besides Facebook.

It's aight people whine too much about it, if you don't want it you can simply edit your status update settings or disable your Facebook account, period.

I agree, that this helps out businesses. I actually when, I am hiring people... I will look up their facebook and see how they act before they hire. I know if they are some 16 to 18 year old looking for a first job they are going to be cocky and arrogant but that is understandable. I also have used it to see what they have done in the past and how they are. We recently found out one of our employees lied on their application because they bragged about it on Facebook. The thing about Facebook is that it does give out all of your information but isn't that easily done anyway when you order something online? What's to say amazon isn't sending out all of your personal information anyway? I mean its not like anyone has actually read the TOS for anything.

You should mention the addictive part of it too. People not functioning properly due too constantly craving facebook.

yeah i was readin or watching something that explained all of that. they suggested 'unplugging' for 24 hours once in a while. no texting, no pc, No technology for a little while. It will help you get back into touch with reality; Maybe reignite a relationship with a friend you have been growing apart from. spend social time without technology was the point really.

Its strange though, it seems facebook whores tend to a lot of parties and such. it seems they have very active social life, but it seems so empty. having so many so called friends seem to lose focus on the depth of the friendship and instead focus on the quantity.

maybe its just me as i have only a handful of friends, but having 20 people you can call yor friends doesnt seem real to me.

The funny thing is, I use Facebook to keep up with friends and make plans with them more than my Phone. My friends and I usually do something every month we like to call "How to be a Man week". We all go camping, bring one cell phone that only can dial 911, and just sit back and relax. It's probably one of the best things we decided to do. It just feels nice to sit out in the woods near a lake and chill out.

Friends can only be described how you want them to be. I describe my friends as people I trust enough to talk about my problems with and help them with theirs. If someone described someone they met on Facebook their friend and telling them it's not real friendship... Well that's like saying finding a girl on WoW or the internet for that matter and marrying her not being true love.

Eh, it's only annoying if you have annoying contacts. I don't friend every person I meet, so I keep a pretty exclusive list of people that I talk with regularly (with the exception of Kaination and Damaera, hah.)

I am the same as Eon but not so exclusive! The only people I have on my Facebook apart from families and relatives, are people that I have atleast spoken to in real life and hit it off with! I have real life friends though that add people even though they have no idea who they are e.g. hot girls. I usually do a refresh on my friends list where I unfriend people asking myself "Why the heck am I friends with this guy/girl."
