I, personally, think that ki-based melee is definately a step in the right direction. However, it does have its problems: namely, a guy "turtling"/"camping", waiting for someone to swoop, then counter-swooping at the last minute.
How to resolve this?
We could have it so that it's based around PL instead of ki. However, in my eyes, this makes things worse: people who have only just joined a server will be at a major disadvantage. Also, there's the "slippery slope" where one guy does well at the beginning, and becomes untouchable for the rest of the game.

What I propose:
- Keep it ki based, but add in another factor: the duration swooped. The amount of ki used in a swoop is added to the ki you have left in determining who wins. Once the swoop ends, that bonus is lost. This means that if two people are at maximum KI, and they go head on at each other, the winner is no longer the one who swoops last.
- In the case of equal ki, the higher PL wins.
- Pressing left click (attack) no longer makes you swoop for x seconds; you swoop for as long as you hold down LMB plus five seconds after letting go.
- Losing the target seems arbitary at the moment. Have it so that you keep a lock on unless you don't swoop for 15 seconds while you have a lock on, or you are blinded. (You can just change weapons if you want to cancel before then.)
