Here is a question, does the game have depth for shadows? In depth, I mean, if the light source is super intense say an energy attack, would the shadow of the player be more dark on the ground, then when he is not creating the attack?

If the game does, could it be possible to add in, or create the effect more?

I know it couldn't be this good, but here are some examples that I found from the new T3 game.

That was kind extensive coding. But yea. HL can easily handle Bloom efect.

Only problem is If you put that into the mod any person playing the mod will get banned by VAC.

Thats what happened to some BTL devs. Got their accounts banned by VAC cause we put in bloom efect.

Also possible on the HL engine. Motion blur, also tryed taht with BTL. Dont know teh VAC status on thatone though.

In any case those efects may cause problems for some people. Like them not beeing able to play the game using Open GL. Just like with Mech Mod. Not everyone could play it on Open GL so they had to use D3D wich is a bit more buggier as we all know.

why were the BTL team members banned for using that effect. And what does it do?

Bloom effect are light effects. Such as this:

and this

Doing so for the Half-Life 1 Engine requires a lot of changes, modification to the openGL if I am not mistaken. But I believe mostly modificated *.DLL Files. VAC really watches closely to modified dll files, hence.. You get banned for it.

Wrong. VAC watches for modifications to the executable files (files with .exe extensions). If VAC cared about DLLs, then mods wouldn't exist because they'd all get you VAC-banned.

Unless the DLL somehow modifies values created by the executable files, VAC is just fine about it.

Not to true.

While VAC watches DLL files it only watches those DLL files taht are known to be ussed with hacks. So you can use any DLL file you want as long as it isnt frequently ussed with hacks. The file needed for bloom is one such file. So sadly no bloom efect ^^

So can we ask Valve to allow certain things for ESF? What if the whole community wrote something to Valve, would that get their attention?

its because that particular bloom effect was done via a open gl wrapper dll which essentially works like cretain cheats (wallhacks and the likes). BTL hat no access to the source after all.
Now if you can do it directly in the mod source its an entirely different thing without the need to worry about VAC
