It's rather simple...the most common form just replaces letters with numbers.
It's a gamer thing...
Personally, I hate it, but I can still read it.

It was developed to confuse people...
People would write stuff in 1337, knowing that, at the time, most people couldn't read it.
It's really common now, though.

1337 is only a bit harder to read unless they start usin [] and that sort of thing why would ya need a converter its not that hard just takes slightly longer
