I have waaaay too much stuff I can't transfer anywhere for safe keeping yet.

Well Mr. Satan's scripts improved things for me, but keep in mind that this isn't only a Half-Life issue. This follows me into Quake 3 as well. In Quake 3 I'll buy that it's an XP refresh rate issue though, but it still slows down at points... how did you guys say you fixed the xp thing?
plus if your os is xp has a refreshrate problem, you can download a program to unlock it program is called Reforce. use at own risk dont over set the Hz ratting can dammage your monitor. just select the default it gives select apply and reboot and you will see the difference already

And a link to reforce http://www.apachego.com/dl/reforce.zip

Installing older drivers isn't always instant-death, especially when it comes to detonators. Not all of the detonator drivers are worth using. Some of the older ones are more stable and actually pull off more FPS in certain games than newer ones. Either way, I remember seeing a Detonator Driver clean up program somewhere that removed it from your registry, but I can't remember where now!

Totally n00bish, but you may have done it, make sure that you have alot of ram allocated to HL and only HL. With a GB of RAM you should be able to allocate 512MB without breaking a sweat.
Jumping from 120 to 250MB allocation on my rig added a few FPS and made my game launches retarded fast (for my hunk of crap machine).

Yep, handled that already. I'm tellin' ya guys it isn't just a Half Life issue. I get slow downs in Quake 3 when I shouldn't too, among other, newer games.

*edit*
reformat!

Detonator drivers are still beta, even nVidia has their flaws. All drivers are tricky with how you update them. ALways uninstall, restart, install, restart.

its a pain, but it prevents mishaps like what you have... At least thats how I solved my problems which are very similar.
