Be reminded that any program that has free versions, usually asks you to download an ad ware program as well.

Gator, GAIN, etc etc are ad ware programs. delete it, it is the source of your pop up problem

CWShredder.exe, it should take care of your browser homepage changing to something other than what you set it to.

StartupList.exe, useful tool for seeing what current processes are running, whats starting up in the start up folder, and the registry.

Among those try Spybot Search and Destroy 1.2, Ad-aware 6, and SpySweeper, just make sure that you update them first. Also there are viruses that will go back to sites and download the spyware again so you might want to run a virus check also. Well that’s all I can think of ATM hope that helps you.

EDIT:

Go to Add/Remove Programs and look for programs that you didn’t install, search C: \ and C: \Program Files for executables, folders, and other files that may look suspicious. Check www.google.com on file names and folders that look suspicious, it is an indispensable tool for telling what is and isn’t spyware.

Also if you happen to find New.Net don’t remove it though Spybot Search and Destroy 1.2, Ad-aware 6, or SpySweeper. Just go to C: \windows or C: \winnt depending on the OS you are running, and check for a file that looks like this “uninstall4_80.exe” its going to be a blue icon. Run that and it will uninstall New.Net correctly.

bleh. you must be running some type of p2p program. whether its imesh, kazaa mirc, edonkey, dc++, kazaa lite.. etc. i got the same "cd-rom open site" after i ran imesh for the first time! i quickly deleted it and noticed i had that kind-of stuff on my comp. i just ran a "get rid of ads here!" program and i guess i choose the right one.

and lol @ Ice Man about that cdrom opening site haha
That cd-rom opening site exploits ActiveX, the same thing used to download and install spyware on your computer via Internet Explorer. lol

In Firebird/Firefox:

Tools->Options-> then click Set as Default Browser

If it doesn't work, you may need to reboot. Also, IE is gonna be all screaming at you and crap about not being the default browser anymore. So you can tell it to screw. :)

You may also want to go Tools->Options->Downloads and change the default action for certain file types. Like, instead of opening MPG movies, have it prompt you to save them to disk, etc.

If you delete any action for a file type, the next time you download a file of that type, it will ask you what you want to do.

All your IE favorites should be imported too. ^_^

Now as for that remaining spyware:

See what is loading when Windows starts:
Start->Run->"msconfig"->Startup Tab

Bring up your task manager, and click the Processes tab. If you see something funky and you don't know what it is, search for the filename on google.com.

Example: "gator.exe"

It should link you to sites with removal instructions for the remaining spyware.

Yeh, first step to a better internet life is toss IE into the trash, where it belongs.

I have been using Firebird/Firefox for a while now and never had any problems with it.
