how do u make a map

i have the hammer thing and i have my halflife in my c drive along with esf and when i make the map i save it as esf_battleground.bsp and when i run it in the thing it say something like file cant be found and i check and the map is in there and in my hammer map folder its there and i ve tryed typing it in the console of the game but no luck it say can be found on severer please tell me in steps what do i do ive red the tutirols but there no help please help ill send u the map if its need for editing to work i just wish to know how

You saved the map as a .bsp, or you compiled it?
Please read and understand <a href="http://forum.esforces.com/showthread.php?t=27917">this</a> thread, it is a must-read sticky for any starting mapper. It should cover many of the questions you may have as you begin mapping.

how do you add a texture to your map? . i created a solid box and press entre it makes it, then i click on the texture application thing then click on a face then click apply but no texture. why?
