hl.exe still a running process

I've had this problem forever, but instead of a minor annoyance, it is now becoming uber-annoying.

Any time I play half-life or a mod, I notice that my system slows down. So I go into the windows task manager and still see hl.exe a running process so I have to shut it down through that. I am running WinXP. I don't think any of my other system stats are relevant, but if you need them, I will give them...

Most likely you have HL running in Win98/ME compatibility

actually that is exactly what was wrong. now why was I running it with win98 compatability? no clue... but thanks man, thanks a lot!
