I have money and can't decide what to get. Never played a MMO before, and my specs are:

Amd Athlon 32 bit
Windows XP HOME
2.2ghz
512 DDR ram
128 intergrated geforce 4 mx

I would get both but then I wouden't have money for a WOW game card, so I can't do that, to those who think money grows off trees.

well guild wars is a better game, buts its not REALLY an MMO. World of war craft is , in my opinion, pretty close to the bottom of the MMO barrel though. I love blizzard games, i love mmo's, can't stand WoW. That being said a lot of people disagree with me. Anyway guild wars is the obviouse choice if money is an issue, and in my opinion its a better game.

A lot of people i know hated Guild Wars, I myself never played it, the only thing semi-appealing is not paying a monthly fee, but i also heard they stick ya with a fee if you want to purchase additional classes n' such. I have played WoW, it's a decent game and i've played plenty of MMORPG's. It's widely popular (they even had to stop manufacturing cd's shortly after release because there were too many people playing and the servers couldn't handle the stress). Latency was a huge issue at release but all/most of those problems have been resolved.

Wow has several features that make it easy for all players. The interface is simple, and based on all other MMORPG's ive played, i think it's the easiest to level up. There is no experience debt, infact the only penalty of dying is your armor/weapon's durability goes down. All in all it costs you money to die and time of course(to walk back to your corpse). There are, of course, several server types to suit your playing style, whether you want to play PvP, Normal, or Roleplaying server. Don't fret, you can still PvP in the normal servers, it is however, totally optional, as opposed to always being flaged in PvP. I myself favor the PvP servers, it's not totally chaotic though, many of the new areas don't auto flag you, so you can get to level 15 or so without seeing any opposing faction attacking you.

There are a couple ways you get around the World of Warcraft, no pun intended =) Walking is the most basic option, there are ships that travel between continents, and at level 40 you're allowed to purchase a mount, and an even faster one at 60. Lastly, the Warlock class in the game can summon players with the help of 2 other friends. Give it a try, it comes with a free month anyways, www.worldofwarcraft.com. Hopefully someone will shed some light on Guild Wars.

I think you may have been mis-informed. When you buy Guild Wars, you get everything. However, like WoW, GW will, from time to time, have retail expansions. I believe that's where you may have heard about a cost for the new classes (as GW, or so I've been told, will be releasing an expansion that will include them). It's not unlike having to pay for the Blood Elves and whatever the new Alliance race will be when the WoW expansion comes out.

However, I agree with what's been stated. GW is not really an MMO, not when compared to the other games that are in that category. GW is probably most akin to Diablo 2 - a shared, story-driven game, as opposed to a completely open-ended MMO. Don't let anyone try to tell you that GW doesn't have the kind of grandeur in it that WoW does, though. When you opt to do the main story quests, there will be plenty of majesty and accomplishment when you and your group finish it off. The difference between WoW and GW lies in the scope, as far as that goes. I never really had the same sense of satisfaction when completing a quest in WoW that I did when I progressed on the story line in GW. However, the scope of WoW simply cannot be disregarded.

They are both very good games. That's all there is to it. I enjoyed both of them for a few months, and they are both happily retired on my shelf right now. If you're gunning for an MMO, though, I'd recommend WoW. GW is not, by comparison, an MMO. If you're looking for an MMO that fits the genre like a glove, go for WoW. You will likely find that it is a cut above similar MMO's on the market. Conversely, if you're looking for something a bit more in the way of a story-centric experience that you can share with some friends, try GW.

It's all opinion.

But most people play WoW, and you have to pay to play that.

Not very much people play GW and its free.

Sooooo, people are willing to play a game you have to buy and then pay monthly fee, over a game that you have to buy but free to play online.

IMO, WoW is a better game... pretty much hands down. The only reason to get Guild Wars, IMO, is if

1.) You are a much more casual gamer
2.) You don't have the money

WoW's world is immense, intricate, and vibrant. It supplies the player with endless amounts of things to do. The auction system is basically the best trading system I've ever seen. The graphics are great, animations are great for both spells and attacks. Cities and zones are massive, the game is just epic in scope. It'll wow you. The gear you can get is highly varied in appearance and uses, and you have many slots with which to customize your character. It's a fully functioning world.

GW, as has been said, is like Diablo in the way it's designed; not a true MMO, doesn't achieve the massive world feel, although the story-driven deal can be fun. The spell animations aren't so great, compared to WoW's. Levels mean much less. Equipment comes by much more scarcely, the trading system is less refined, and equipment itself is less varied in appearance and use. etc. etc.

Honestly, GW is fun. At least, I have fun with it. But compared to WoW its kind of out of the league, at least in my tastes. Blizzard is a great company and they put together a marvelous, soul-sucking game. If I had the money and conviction that the game wouldn't devour my life, I'd be playing WoW.

WoW is "better" if you want to get the entire MMORPG experiance.

Guild wars is "better" if you don't have cash to spare, and want more of a tactics type game when it comes to battles.

Personally I prefer WoW, but they're both fun. I haven't WoW in 7 months or so, and guildwars only on occasion at a friend's house for no more than 20 min.

GW is alright. It's a decent game if you enjoy doing the same thing over and over like in Diablo 2.

Everything in GW except the cities is instanced. Only certain areas of WoW are instances (dungeons). Most is not. So if you enjoy socializing and and playing new content all the time then WoW is definatly for you. If you enjoy Diablo 2 and like everything instanced without the in depthness of WoW, then you'd like GW.

By the way, FilePlanet is offering a free trial of World of Warcraft right now for 10 days. So go ahead and try it for free, and if you like it, then just subcribe for the 15 bucks a month, as far as I know you don't even need to buy the game this way (I could be wrong though).

I think it will run.

I have an AMD Athlon 2500+ with 1024 DDR ram (pc3200) and a 128mb gforce fx n6600. The only time I have problems is if I am doing Molten core, Onyxia or Blackwing Lair (these are instances that require 40 people).

Ontopic:
Personally I'd go for World of Warcraft.
From time to time you get a nice update that either improves the class you play or makes it slightly worse. It also contains map updates such as new areas.

When the expansion comes up 2 new races will be made available and alot more land will be open to the public.

I played Guild Wars and it just was not my thing :)
