Hey. I was wondering.. I know you can turn your max FPS from 72 to 100 by editting the config.cfg (among other things), but is it safe to boost it even more? I've heard people claim 100 is the max, but I've put the limit at 150, and had it go.

Somebody mentioned "server desychronization" at that FPS, but he sounded like an idiot most of the time, so I didn't know who to believe.

Does anybody know for a fact, what I should put it at? Or if it can support 100+ without any problems?

(My computer isn't a problem supporting it, it's a brand new Alienware.)

Feel free to IM me, or just respond here. Thanks in advance.

Yeap. Thats how it works with HL. Thats what kinda sucks bout it.
But you can check your acctually fps max by typing in console
"Timerefresh".

I donno how to really get it above 100 though :\
I've heard some ppl do it. I manage to get mine to 100 by
turning vsync off.

I'm not sure why people are so crazy about FPS anyways. After it gets above ~40 FPS the human eye can't tell the difference anyways.

So I think 100 is fine. :p

Actually, the human eye can't distinguish between more then 60--but you can still see a difference during heavy motion. Higher FPS makes it "blur" together realistlcally. Also, when you turn rapidly, in pretty much any game, you get FPS loss while it loads the surrounding areas.. So if you raise the max to 150, and your computer can handle it.. The loss might go from 150 to 120, which is a lot less noticable then 72 to 45, etc..

This is what I was told, and it seems to be true if I try it..

Assuming your PC can handle a max fps of 100: (hardware limit, not half-life limit)

If your max is 100 and it drops by 30, your fps will be 70

If your max is 70 and it drops by 30, your fps will be 70

If your max is 100 and it drops by 50, your fps will be 50

If your max is 70 and it drops by 50, your fps will be 50

In HL the only thing the max fps does it limit how high your fps can go in half-life, not how high your PC will try to produce your fps.

I've read on Tweak sites that the HL engine cant go passed 100. But if you open the config you can change it to the max to whatever you want like you said, I believe its usually set to 70 or 60. You could try changing it to 200, but you wouldn't notice THAT much of a change. I guess its all up to what you think is good.
Check the FPS after setting it passed 100, see if it says 150 or something.
I usually get the max on a 1.6GHz Geforce FX 5200, so it wouldn't be hard for an Alienware at all :)
Also I think one time I was playing an old DOS game and the FPS had no limit, so it ran over 500, making it too hard to play, everything ws happening too fast, so I had to limit the FPS to 60. So it would make sense if the FPS gets past a certain point that it could cause that 'server desynchronization'. Meaning your computer would process things faster than the server and cause lag, but oyu probably already know that.
If it were me I'd just stick with whatever your comfortable with, it would be interesting to see whether or not HL can go past X FPS though, try setting it to 500 lol.
After I turned vsynch off on everytthing I noticed higher FPS cause VSYNCH would only allow the FPS max to go as high as your refresh rate :\

FPS matters a great deal. Very skilled players are being held back by the fact that they don't get 100 fps. The 200 bucks for a 512 stick and a GeForce4 is well worth it. The difference between 60 and 100 is very noticeable and improves your game by a HUGE margin. Believe what you will about how much the human eye can detect, but I'm sure most of you are dying to play riverside with no PC lag whatsoever. Go the extra mile and get the FPS problem fixed, you won't be disappointed.

there is "no" diference between 72 and 100 fps. i tested this mysef. if on eye tests u get low scores then your eyes wil only be able to master 60 (or lwoer if there really bad :D) fps but valve put 72 as max cause thats te max we can see. al u eletes at esf just wana show off your uBer 100fps :p

Well, it's like SailorAlea said, but even lower than 60.
The human eye can only retain an image for about 1/30th of a second.
If you have a flip book with 60 pages, and flip through the pages at even speed over a total of two seconds, to you it's going to look like 2 seconds of seamless animation.
But, of course, FPS changes.
If you get a constant 50 FPS for instance, it's going to look pretty well, you won't be able to tell between that and 100 FPS. But when you're watching two people in two huge power struggles, and your FPS was generally 50 before, it's now dropped down to somewhere in the 20's, where you can tell it's getting slow. And if you had 100 before, it's now probably dropped down to 70 or 60 at the least, where your eyes won't even have noticed it.
So, in short, in a game like ESF, you're not going to notice the difference between 60 and 100 FPS when you're in a server alone, staring at the esf_cell_day arena, but as soon as some people get in there and start firing beams left and right, the 100 FPS is always better to have.
That's my rant. ^.^

Can't your system lag if your framerate drops from 100 to 50 suddenly and give you the impression that your framerate is actually much lower than it is? Doesn't it cause issues when your framerate is constantly bouncing up and down 20 or 30 frames a second? It does for me, and I know in Quake 3 it can cause small bits of frame latency as your monitor and game engine adjust to the change of pace.

No, a drop from 100 to 50 isn't that bad, it's happened to me and a rarely notice. Once you get lower than 40 it starts to become noticable.
