Ailing Cuban leader Fidel Castro says he will not be returning to lead the country and is retiring as head of state.

Castro, now 81, seized power in an armed revolution 49 years ago.

The news of his retirement was contained in a statement published on the website of the Communist Party's Granma newspaper.

"To my dear compatriots, who gave me the immense honour in recent days of electing me a member of parliament ... I communicate to you that I will not aspire to or accept ... the position of president of council of state and commander in chief," Castro said in his statement.

Castro said he would not seek a new presidential term when the National Assembly meets on February 24.

The National Assembly or legislature is expected to nominate his brother and designated successor Raul Castro as president in place of Castro, who has not appeared in public for almost 19 months after being stricken by an undisclosed

illness.

His retirement drew the curtain on a political career that spanned the Cold War and survived US enmity, CIA assassination attempts and the demise of Soviet Communism.

A charismatic leader famous for his long speeches delivered in his green military fatigues, Castro is admired in the Third World for standing up to the United States but considered by his opponents a tyrant who suppressed freedom.
Might be some interesting discussion to be had here! Let's try not to be anti-anything here or resort to the "let's nuke them" mentality.

His brother is going to be a worse dictator than he was.

Man, I feel sorry for Cubans, especially when they saw Castro as a hero for removing Baltista (sp?) from power, then he turned the tables on everything and it was more of the same.

America has done it's part in making Cubans miserable. Maybe now they'll remove the trade restrictions.

Well, as I've said for the last 10 or so years, he was really getting up there, his health was frail, I always thought he should just retire to some nice Carribean Island somewhere...

I hear Cubans are taking this rather hard. Castro's been their leader and role model for like what, half a century? Losing him as a leader now, I know the elderly people are unhappy, at least.

Onslaught speaks the truth.

In any case, we like to think of Cuba as being an evil state, but there is no one that goes hungry in Cuba. The people may be poor, but they are fed. And you have to keep in mind the people of Cuba would be a lot richer if it were not for U.S. the trade embargo against it.

I'm pretty sure it's only America where Cuban Cigars are illegally, considering we're the only country left with a trade embargo against them? Maybe England still has an embargo too?

Not sure about England, but pretty much cubans are legal everywhere else. Although I've yet to smoke one, probably because it's legal theres no real exciting thing about smoking them.

From what I've read Magus seems to be right and his brother won't be a very good leader, though that comes from American media so who really knows. I know our government feels that it is their responsibility to ensure that the countries we do business with follow our ideals and such but we sure trade a **** ton with China, I don't see why we shouldn't lift the trade embargo on Cuba, regardless of their political climate. I guess we'll see.

Well it takes two, I don't think the leadership of Cuba is really excited about trade too much.

But hey, who knows?

Why did people like Castro if he was a dictator?
He was the leader of a revolution, fighting for the people, and later became the president for those same people.

Many, many considered him a hero, a father, a savior.
