He doesn't know what deus ex machina actually means, so I stopped reading after that.

Again, how does it apply to the ending? I've yet to see someone in this thread explain that.

I'm asking one of you to write something out so I can tell you precisely why you're wrong, as well as the only scenario where you'd be correct.

Great little thing here for anyone who wants to have a crazy easy playthrough, even trainers can't give you this easy of a game, but it also has some fun stuff:

http://www.mediafire.com/?masfy7e3c8h827s
====================================================================

Encumberence increased to allow the heaviest of all 5 weapon types and -200% cooldown.

All armor unlocked, every individual armor piece has +10% to each armor category, for a total of +50 for each armor category with full set.

Each unique armor set has +50 to each armor category except ammo. The bar will not display bonus but it does apply during combat.

Level 60 gives extra talent points for you and henchmen.

Sniper, Assault, SMG, Shotgun and Pistols dont use ammo, have unlimited ammo, no reload necessary.

Numberpad 7 toggle fly camera <- Does not untoggle, use with caution

Numberpad 4 gives every weapon except particle rifle.

Numberpad 3 gives 9mil credit.

Numberpad 2 adds XP to get to level 60.

Numberpad 1 give 10 talent points

Numberpad 0 subtract 1 talent point

F1 Sets paragon to max

F2 Sets paragon to zero

F3 Sets renegade to max

F4 Sets renegade to zero

F12 Take screenshot, coal w/o key bindings still has this key binding

Ship doesnt use fuel.

Scanning once detects all available objects in sector and scanning sector doesnt attract reapers.

Increased distance interactable objects show up on screen.

Increased planet rotation speed when scanning and reticle movement speed when scanning planet.

All bonus powers unlocked.

As for Dues Ex Machina, I mean cmon. You can't google? I'll copy n Pasta.

A deus ex machina is a plot device whereby a seemingly unsolvable problem is suddenly and abruptly solved with the contrived and unexpected intervention of some new event, character, ability, or object.

Mother. Of. God.

State how this applies to the ******* game. Jesus Christ. Tell me, in your own words, how and why the Catalyst (or if you're a complete moron, the Crucible) is an example of a deus ex machina.

Why is this difficult?

Deus ex machina is latin for "God from the/a (I forget which) machine", which is fairly ******* obvious here. There was no mention of "The Catalyst" as a person before it happened. It was alluded to as a weapon that would stop the reapers. Very little was mentioned about it throughout the game, and in fact, there was no genuine reason to think it would be a successful weapon. It is a deus ex machina. If you don't get that, then that's on you. If you ask their very own writers, they will probably tell you the same thing, and say something clever about how it actually was a "god from a machine" and so it makes perfect sense!

But it doesn't, and it's still a dick move.

How hard was that?

Now here's why you're wrong. In order for the catalyst to be a Deus Ex Machina, he needs to have a) not been mentioned and come out of left field and b) taken direct action. The catalyst does not come out of nowhere. It'd been alluded to for almost the entirety of the game, in much the same way the Crucible was. No one knew what it was, or what it would do, in much the same way no one knew what the Crucible was or what it would do, other than "beat the Reapers". But they knew it was something, and was supposed to win the war. The means were unknown. The entire game builds up to that point. It didn't pop up out of nowhere, it didn't come out of left field and the catalyst didn't actually do anything. What it did was provide exposition, and offer options. It isn't a Godchild, because it isn't a child, nor is it some crazy space spirit. It's a VI (or AI depending on how one wants to argue it). It took the form of of someone you felt strongly about, because its lazy writing, but that doesn't make it any more mysterious or magical.

A deus ex machina did not simply pop out of thin air, save the day and ensure happiness for all. If anything, the catalyst attempted to make sure only the worst possible outcome for organics was chosen by offering very, very ****ty options.

Did the resolution of the plot occur internally, through logic that follows from the events?

No.

Then it's a deus ex machina.

They said the Crucible was necessary to defeat the Reapers. They said the Catalyst was the means by which to use the Crucible. The Catalyst offered you options. You chose an option. That option activated the Crucible. The Reapers were either destroyed, controlled or peace was made. Throughout the game, TIM tells you humanity must control the Reapers. Option 1. Everyone else wants to kill the Reapers so that they are never a threat. Option 2. Option 3 was what Saren wanted. Everything alluded to, everything planned for.

A good ending? No. Did this plot element exist before making your decisions? Yes. Was the timing of your encounter with the catalyst illogical? No. Did you travel back in time to change anything? No. Did an unknown force come out of nowhere and fix everything for the benefit of the protagonist? No.

Not a deus ex machina.

I had suspected throughout the game that Shephard might be the Catalyst somehow but I thought to myself the writers would have to suck a lot to make such a cliche thing. I wish they used that cliche at least instead of turning the Catalyst into some VI/AI and filling the ending with plotholes mainly because of him/it.

I had this argument for months on the BSN, having read the tlk files before the game came out. Can't be a DEM, it does not swoop in unexpectedly, you know about it, and it doesn't do anything for you. Win button? Yes, certainly that trope, but far from a DEM.

That was actually one of the original ideas, as you can see in their "Making of" DVD thingy.

So where do we go from here? Throughout the next year, we will support Mass Effect 3 by working on new content. And we’ll keep listening, because your insights and constructive feedback will help determine what that content should be. This is not the last you’ll hear of Commander Shepard.
Quite odd, as they said this was the ending of Shepard's story. Unless they literally mean you'll hear of him and not play as him.

I'll leave this out here for you folk who've already finished the game. Its my way of showing off. I'll be playing ME3 all tweaked out while you all have your SD experiences.

Tomorrow is the day my Vanguard shines in the darkness. All shiny like in better graphics.

Well...

You can increase shadow resolution..and uhm...uh...turn off some effects you can't in the config utility...

But yeah...not that much.

Yes, very good. I can see you all can read and are clearly jealous. Sighing exasperated sighs and murmuring under your breaths, "Why oh why did I not wait for this supreme tweak guide that would've shown me the light the way it was meant to be seen?!!!" I can understand that, clearly I can. My heart goes out to you but I am afraid you will have to be satisfied with the lowly views that you have seen through your lenses.

Now if only this download would get over so I wouldn't have to waste time with my words and let my fingers do the talking.

Good day.

Pardon my language, but are you that ******* stupid or do you not read half the **** that gets typed in articles? Mass Effect 3 is obviously going to have DLC. Why the **** would the DLC not involve Shepard?

Hey, Z Power, have you heard about Arkham City? It's supposed to come soon.
