So, I was playing GMOD 9.0.4 on my server today, and a "user" came in, by the name of "Steam Ad No 7." According to it, GMOD 9.0.4 will "cease server activity" no later than January 1, 2007. According to status, he had a Steam id.

I got annoyed with the things he was saying (generic comments that would be said by a bot), so I kicked and banned him, but, I don't know if it was legitimate, or just some asshat end-user trying to scare people into buying GMOD 10.

So, my question is, do you think this is legitimate, or just some jerkoff harassing people?

Actually with Valve you always know.

Popular free mods always get updated and made pay-or-die. Counterstrike, Team Fortress, etc.

I doubt it's legit but it's probably possible that they'd cease support of the old one so you have to pay for the new one. Back when they started Counterstrike's buy-up they didn't have the monopoly of Steam to help them do such things. Now they are perfectly in control of such things.

Either way, I don't know. People should be ashamed to even play that mod, anyways...it's like, not even a game. I fail to see what about it is worth paying for.

Oh yes, I should be ashamed for playing that mod, because I enjoy playing around with physics like a little boy.

I'm just saying, it's not even, like, a game...I don't know why you'd bother with it if it starts to cost money.

Is it an online game? Like, do people actually go in and join you and...build stuff? Cause if not, you can obtain it from alternative means.

Well it sounds like it is...but I still don't think it matters. Everything Valve does is through Steam and Steam is online so I'm sure they can make it not work, much in the same way that if your Steam can't connect you will also have a hard time playing single player games like HL2.

Well, there are ways to play HL2 or go into DoD: S without ever opening up steam. You can't do anything with DoD: S since its an online game, but you can go right through HL2's singleplayer and Episode 1 without any issues. I like to test games before I buy them. I'm sure if one was willing to, the same could be done with GMOD.

There are many people that enjoy playing the mod Pride, it's given them years of entertainment.. If they want to purchase it as a thank-you to Garry, then there's absolutly nothing wrong with that [Besides, the retail has a lot of new objects / features, it is an improvment over GMOD 9]. Who are you to say one's taste in game's (and it is a game) is wrong?

But regardless, I don't think they can shut down the online section of the game since the servers are run by users and not Valve.

But the servers have to go through Steam; I'm sure it's plenty possible for them to cut stuff out. They just don't, because people going online through steam gives them revenue, probably.

And if you like the game, Sub, it's fine. I'm just saying, I don't buy thousands of dollars worth of computer equipment, maintain a high speed internet connection, run dozens of different video and computer tweaks, just to have to go through the WORST ONLINE INTERFACE EVER CREATED to play with some dolls and put them in perverted poses.

To each his own, but I just figure if it doesn't have any actual gameplay, it can't really be considered a game in my eyes. I mean, what do you do in it...besides make cool scenes and make Alyx do perverted poses? The answer is simple: nothing worth money.

If you think that the only thing you can do is putting people in perverted poses, you must have joined a noob server. There were plenty of server in the time that I played that just made fortress wars. First build a fortress of some kind and some weapons (catapults capable of hauling explosive barrels to the other side) and then just shoot eachother till the fortress is destroyed (if the fortress is made out of wood.)

I never even bothered to download it. Never appealed to me.

That's a pretty creative use for it, though, I have to admit. I still wouldn't buy it for that, but it is a pretty cool idea.

I'd agree it's not worth buying, however it is rather entertaining. It's got a lot of spiffy features, and it's a great tool(?) to kill time with.

I think they figure most people think it isn't worth buying--which is why the claim that the servers might be brought down seems like a probable response.

I usually make fully working automatons...

Takes a lot more work to make machines, but it's fun.

GMOD (or "Gary's Mod" for short) is created by (as you would guess) a guy named Gary. Unfortunately, Valve's software is basically its own form of DRM. Gary has gone into some kind of agreement with Valve, which is why GMOD 10 is no longer free... So if Valve wanted to block something in Steam, they could...

Keep in mind, Gary's just as bad as Valve if he's agreed to block GMOD 9. Because I'm quite sure one can choose not to block previous versions.

If more people wanted to make it fun and make wars and create stuff together instead of 'omg here is a turny spin thing w/ alyx and barney doing it on it while spinning, lol!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!' then I might consider buying it.

but if people just want to put perverted poses and giggle, then I can say it wont be fun.

And apparently Kaination didn't even read what I said... >.>

On a lot of servers, they disable the ability to spawn ragdolls. I know I do... I'm not playing GMOD to see 13 year old kids posing the characters in obscene ways.

Yeah, I just joined a server for the first time. They made a soccer field and were playing soccer. Me, being a moron, didn't even realize they were playing soccer and I thought that the fence was built into the field. Once I realized, I started to build a dome, they helped out and eventually we had a pretty awesome soccer field.... Then the server crashed.

I started to make some bleachers before the server crashed

My point is it's not just a bunch of people posing scenes. You can build anything you want if you put your mind into it.
