destroying bulding

to make beams go through wall and buldings to destroy them

how about making it so you can destroy building and when you shoot the beams near the ground it makes a mark where you shot it at so if you shoot a big beam like the generic beam at full power you couldn't get heart be your beam

Don't you think if they could do this, they would? Its been suggested many times, and everytime someone gos to them and tells them it cant be done in HL w/o causing major lag, mabye if people were smart and looked around or atleast used search, they would know this.

Having most everything in a map interactive, such as being breakable, would cause MAJOR lag. The HL engine just isn't cut out for that kind of stuff.

There is a way to do this, I've seen it done. It does not cause undue lag. It has been done on cs_office, and a number of NIPPER's maps. It was really more like a break-away wall though, but it is the same concept. Or almost the same...

this would not work


the only way u could make it work would increase the map sizes emmencely and add lots of lag

I'm telling you it can be done without lag. Maybe not all the buildings, but a good deal of them could be made break-away by beams, and without making lag.

some reasons why this idea has failed every time it has been said.

*the whole lag issue
*reduction of frame rate on slower computers
*what appens when all the objects have been exploded? just a big flat platform where everything once stood.

while i am a big fan of red faction and its geo-mod technology it would not run all that happy on half life. The only way it could be put in is to have quite limited amounts of destructable objects, such as maby the trees on esf_namek. And also to the cs_office example the reason why cs_office doesnt lag in CS is because it has very limited destructable objects, i think 2 from memory. Cool idea, too many problems.
