Can you go into details of how the selection process would be made for the Battlefield 2142 Beta?

Colin: In order to include an equal number of representatives from around the globe we are working with EA to ensure that each regional management team have keys for distribution to players who have been an active part of the Battlefield Community. Also we are working with IGN/Gamespy to conduct registration in which players can register and answer a few simple questions related to Battlefield.

What do you hope to achieve throughout this beta process?

Colin: Our primary goal is to tune the game play so that we can deliver the best overall game experience at release. We are also very interested to see how players advance through the ranks in this Tuning Beta as we may need to adjust the criteria for ranking. Feedback from players on both aspects is very important to us.

Do you see Titan Mode replacing Conquest as the main gameplay mode?

Colin: Conquest has a lot of staying power. It has remained an extremely popular game type across many FPS and RPG games for many years. With that said Titan mode is something completely new and we are very proud with how awesome and dynamic the game play is. Titan Mode will likely replace conquest in many players hearts but I do not think that it will entirely replace it.

By making the Defibrillator into an unlock item. How do you view this as promoting teamwork when there is an injured player that needs healing or a revive but no one can accomplish this since it is only available as an unlock?

Colin: The Defib unlock is a first tier unlock for the assault kit. This makes it easily accessible after only a few rounds. Talented players will be able to achieve their first unlock in a single round. Forcing players to choose this as an unlock will force players to be more thoughtful about what type of player they want to be. Making the conscious decision to choose something that is directly focused on helping his teammates means that the player will be more active in using this tool to help his team. Also this player will then be a higher value as a support player in a squad. This thought process is a major step to ensure that players are able to customize their role in the Battlefield experience.

What do you say to all those fans who feel BF2142 will just be another Battlefield: Vietnam?

Colin: I actually appreciate the comparison as it is a great platform for discussion. Battlefield: Vietnam was a great game that could be thought of as am extreme make over of Battlefield 1942. However it didn?t bring any real new dynamics to the game. Battlefield 2142 is a near complete overhaul to game play tuning while also bringing entirely new facets to the game experience. The pod system alone could be, at the bare minimum, thought of as something so new to qualify Battlefield 2142 as a new game. However we go further to introduce an entirely new game mode, entirely new vehicles, and enhancements to everyone?s old favorites that this is an entirely new experience. Many games re-use an existing engine in order to help cut development time and allow for the team to make enhancements to that engine which separates it from the original title. Keeping this in mind I am quite happy to say that Battlefield 2142 is an entirely new Battlefield Experience.

How will the ranking systems be improved? What are the new features that we can expect?

Colin: Customization is the main focus for the new unlocks system. We are also focused in making sure that there isn?t one kit that is ?THE KIT? to play. Every kit brings a ton of utility to the game and really needs to be present in order for a team to have all possible advantages. We are also focused in not having specific unlocks that change the balance in play. While a assault player with full unlocks does have the advantage he will not be able to win the fight without utilizing the skills he needed to gain those unlocks when fighting a brand new player. Our unlock system primarily provides options for how players are able to win individual battles and thus the overall war.

What are the new features of commander mode?

Colin: The largest change that has the most ?Wow? potential is the orbital strike EMP. This tool allows the commander to disable enemy vehicles in an area to assist his team.

What was the overall reaction when you heard Enemy Territory: Quake Wars was delayed until 2007? Do you feel that you can market to more gamers now than before?

Colin: ET:QW never really affected our idea of which gamers we could or could not market to. With the overall appeal of Battlefield and the great experience that is waiting for players in 2142 we know that this game will be well received. We recognize the challenges that the Splash Damage team are facing in developing a full game and fully support them as fellow developers.

With over 40 unlock choices, do you feel that you are giving to much of a choice to gamers, as they will be to focused on trying to achieve these unlocks than playing as a team and winning?

Colin: We are setting up the game so that the best way to achieve these unlocks is to play as a team and win. As mentioned earlier we are interested to see how players react to the new unlock and ranking system in the Tuning Beta. If we see areas that need to be adjusted before release we will review and, if appropriate, make those adjustments so that players have a top notch game experience when we release.

What do you say to the competitive community of Battlefield? Why should this game appeal to them? As it seems their requests go unanswered, for example BFTV which has been asked for since Battlefield 1942.

Colin: We want to do as much as possible to help the competitive community. We are setting up to sponsor leagues so that players have a high profile and well structured system in which they can compete. We have also introduced game play aspects like field upgrades and multiple movable spawn points to allow for quick and coordinated soldier entry into the battles.

What kind of mod support can we expect? As the current BF2 Mod Tools are basically being seen as unsupported.

Colin: Our Live Team has already begun taking steps to help promote and support our mod teams. For 2142 we are working to create reference assets and tutorials to help mod teams adjust to the new features of 2142. We are also looking to provide such tutorials as soldier skinning so that mod teams can have those items they have wanted. Overall we are making improvements to our support and appreciate the mod communities support.

If you would like to say something to the Battlefield Community about BF2142, what would that be?

Colin: Battlefield 2142 kicks ass. Make your own kit. Become known for what skills you want to display and not for being the best at skills everyone uses to get ahead. The experience in Battlefield and its community is only going to get better.

Also there is news that the Battlefield 2142 Beta will be released next week, but like always (since we are talking about EA Games/DICE here) there is a chance it will be delayed.
