well there aren't any free good ones ( except trial versions ).
i really recomment nod32 from eset or eset smart security( nod32 + firewall )
for schoolchildren/students it costs only 50% of the full price. Which is for 3 years about 50€ = ~17€/Year

What I can say about nod32.
its fast, small in size, it doesn't eat any performance(I'm always running it even in games like Saints Row, oblivion, esf, source) , it detects more viruses then any other av software, and its cheap =)

I fricking love my Kaspersky.

I always had norton of McAfee, and my computer went bananas after 6 months.

Since kaspersky I didn't had 1 problem, and I have it at least over a year.(even more)

It really is good, doesn't slow me down either, and I have a 3 year old 3ghz pentium 4 and almost all my hard drives are taken(yes my PC got a lot to load)

I think you will like it

Chalk up another recommendation for ESET Nod32. I've been using it for just about a year, now, and I've never used such a robust anti-virus program whose definitions are updated so frequently AND that has a tiny footprint in terms of the amount of system resources it allows for itself.

I'd stay away from free anti-virus programs; from most reviews I've read, they seem to lack both the quality and quantity of support you get from a program that requires a paid subscription.

I completely agree. I used Norton Anti-Virus for a VERY long time, and it never, and I mean ever, improved in terms of performance. Not only did it hog a ton of available resources, but its annoying firewall pop-ups would always surface at the worst possible time and, more often than not, result in me having to terminate whatever game I was in >_>

Nod32 also, allegedly, has MUCH better definitions than Norton.

I do wonder why Norton made it in the top 10 anti virus software. Meh, it may be a good software but I wonder why they never fixed the performance issues. Even I had problems with it in the past thus I never used it anymore. I also had a few issues with NOD32 in the past though. Downloading big files takes NOD32 quite some time to scan the file, which kills your internet explorer completely.

There's no good or bad antivirus. All comes in how you're using your pc. Don't open pr0n sites and your pc will be clean ;)

AVG and Kapersky are good, so is Avast most times, I'm surprised that it caused problems. AVG can occasionally miss things on a scan after its installed, but the resident shield doesn't let anything by. I've also had problems with AVG and Supreme Commander (false positives).

Clamwin is also a very good open source freebie.
