sigh,
Niobe, just because you got one bad Asus board dosn't mean the entire company and all sub-divisions of it suck. You say that your sound dosn't work on WinME, did it ever occur to you that WinME is quite possibly the biggest mistake MS ever made? You've heard from multiple people that Asus motherboards are good boards, even a middle-aged and correct me if I'm wrong, liscensed computer technician tell you that Asus is not a bad company. My friend's ATi card blew up in his computer, does that mean he hates ATi? Hell no, he bought an x800 since then and loves it.
Bottom line is such, Asus is not a bad company if you know how to use the boards. One faulty board does not throw the credibility of an entire company out the window.

Yea, I can basically tell that Niobe had some sort of computer problem and just took the easiest way out by blaming some computer part, and decided to blame the Motherboard.

I would have to say 9 out of 10 major problems with any PC wouldn't be caused by the motherboard / mainboard. I'd say the vast amount of problems usually aren't even hardware problems, but thats just me.

As for Maxtor, I'll never use one again, because I had a bad experience with one, along with just about everyone else I've known with one.

Niobe, give it up. The purpose of this thread isn't "which mobo is teh suck," or "it sucks because it reads my email slowly," which makes no sense at all anyway.

What video card are you planning on? I'd highly recommend an ATI, if that isn't already on your mind. I just wouldn't recommend buying an x800 at this time. I'd go for a 9800 Pro, or possibly a 9600XT, but that's only if you're going to be big in playing some of these recent games. Just remember The Law of Diminishing Returns. ;)
For the HDD(s), definately go with Western Digital, as mentioned earlier.
I don't see a big reason to scout out a good brand-named CD-ROM/CD-RW, though Cuc'll probably rip me apart with a good reason I hadn't though of. =P
I just have a cheap Artec, and it's worked fine for me for quite awhile. I don't burn that many CDs though, so that may be a factor.

I'm 28, and I have roughly 13 years of system building experience. I took 3 years of vocational school for Computer Science, and 2 years of College for it. While there I learned a great deal about software engineering, hardware engineering, data entry, and system repair and diagnosis. I am not A+ Certified, that's actually beneath what I was going for, and I learned more than enough to qualify as a technician.

I can tell you right now, Niobe, that 99% of your problem is WinME, which is a port of win9x running on a dos emulator. Sounds real stable . . . if you loaded Win98SE you'd see instant reversal in fortune. You might want to download Spybot S&D, Spyware Blaster, Grisoft's AVG, and ZoneAlarm. Run them all, if that fails, do a full system reinstall, I garauntee your problem is unauthorized programs running on your machine and/or poor setup of the OS.
